Unt Hotel and Stadium Deal Announced!!!

John Q. Hammonds founded the Embassy Suites - now part of the Hilton chain. The beautiful hotels with the atriums were his ideas. Finally Denton is getting a first class hotel. Maybe Paris foe homecoming in 2010?

this is just a guess, but it would not susprise me if this hotel chain was the major "naming rights" stadium donor we have been waiting for. again, i have no insite on this except a hope and a prayer.

The JQH Arena is a new $67 million basketball arena in Springfield, Missouri opened in 2008, it is the home of the Missouri State University Bears and Lady Bears basketball teams. It has a maximum seating capacity of 11,000. JQH stands for John Q. Hammons, a local hotel magnate who donated $25 million for the arena. Hammons later increased his donation to $30 million due to rising costs in construction.

I KNEW I recognized the name, but couldn't place it... I used to live in Springfield about 15 years ago, and there is a John Q Hammons Parkway.

Hammons is a heavyweight in the hotel world, and is Hilton's flagship Embassy Suites franchisee. An Embassy really makes the most sense there, though Renaissance is also battle tested as a Mini-Convention center flag as well (see Gatlyn park in Richardson, which is also a JQH property).

Embassy Suites was created and owned by Promus Hotel Corporation, a hotel management and franchise company from Memphis, Tennessee. In addition to Embassy, Promus also owned Hampton Inn, Homewood Suites, and Doubletree, all of which are now owned by Hilton. Hammons did not "Invent" the Embassy Suites concept, but they were the pioneers of the Atrium style hotel which is very popular today.

In addition, unlike many hotel and management companies, they are long term players so if they are in something, they are likely in for the long haul unlike many owner/operators and management companies.

This is GREAT news for both UNT and the City of Denton even if this doesn’t connect to the stadium’s naming rights. NO University in the state will have the type of facility we will have if JQH is involved in this.

I agree this is fantastic news for UNT and Denton....but that damn thread header is really, really misleading. Not a damn word about the stadium in this announcement. Maybe it's part of the negotiations that are starting up, but we wouldn't be privy to that type of information at this point.

Wake me up when the athletic fee bill passes the state legislature.....then maybe we'll hear how this new resort center could be tied in with a stadium.

Great news for UNT, though....just fix the dang thread header, please.

If you ever have been to The Renaissance Hotel in Richardson, it is one of Hammond's, too. I think personally that the current economic climate will stall this undertaking, however. I agree with DallasGreen, I'll be happier when I learn that all the contracts have been signed.

Stimulus money is being used on construction contracts, so who knows when this will begin.

Do not bet on the hotel being delayed. The Hilton brands will open over 300 hotels this year.

I would be very skeptical of JQH contributing to the stadium in any way. He is a Missouri State alum and already has two sports facilities named after him in Springfield, MO.

could this deal possibly be affected by Dallas' inability to get a convention center/hotel deal done? Last I read, a huge group in Dallas was filing something to delay/kill it.

Speaking of a teaching lab, why not make the club level shown in the stadium plans a "lab" run by the HRM students? Keep the club open year round, move the student run cafe from the Gateway Center to the new stadium and now you have teaching space in the stadium freeing up some state money for the project.

I am suprised that Texas State has a nearby Embassy Suite/Convention Center with over 280 rooms... Very nice facility.

But great news....Looks like a top notch facility, and John Q. Hammons is the right developer for the project......which is very important....Just ask the city of Denton and the idiots who planned the defunct Rayzor Ranch project.
