Today the bill got first reading in the Senate (they don't really read it) and was referred to the Senate Higher Education Committee. This is all routine procedure that should not spur anyone to say YAAAY!!! or JUST MORE PROOF THAT NORTH TEXAS IS ALWAYS GETTING DISSED!!! or anything else that involves the shift lock. It means basically somewhere between little and nothing.

The next step will be getting a hearing on the bill before said committee. No hearing is scheduled yet. Despite the fact that they convened a month ago, it's still very early in the session.

Do you know if this is going through as a one issue bill, or will it be attached to other items? I would hate for this to have the same fate as the law school bill from last year.

Impossible to say at this point. Not much that happens to bills before March 1 matters very much, because many of them get squished or twisted in some way. Sometimes if a bill looks weak through its first couple of trials, its supporters arrange a piggyback ride. This one hasn't had any trials yet.

The Law School was an amendment, attached to an unpopular eminent domain bill. The athletic fee is standing on its own for now... we'll see if any UT supporters attach a poison pill amendment, but I really doubt it.
