"to Have Any Kind Of Success At The Professional Level,

Working under center is exactly how all the rest of our QBs made it to the NFL.

What is the point of this thread again?

Sorry, I didn't mean to post something so obvious. The point of this thread, and there are two of them with me, is that we need some plays from under center for our program to succeed, of course I know there's going to continue to be ignorance that will continue to argue with that fact here. And also that if we ever hope to see a QB from this era make it at the next level we also need some plays from under center.

Well, considering OU was successful for years running the Wishbone, which was never run in the pro's, and many successful college programs of today rarely run plays from under center, OU, Florida, UT, TTech, etc..., I really don't see the concern. Now if a pro team show's up on our schedule then that's another story.

The point of the thread is big Rick wants us under center on short down and distance situations.

Dodge has to pull out all stops this season or he is history and everyone knows that. Under center? I don't believe he will go that far.

He will use TE's for Max pass protection for the obvious, he knows his QB's cannot keep getting blasted, especially Junior.

I think Coach Dodge should definitely consider adding some plays "under center"...not for the development of the QB so much, but to increase chances of winning. Third and goal from the 1 and you are in the spread...Hmmmmmm...many other opportunities to go "under center" for a play or too...heck even the "mad pirate" out in Lubbock has plays in his offense that start "under center".

I would love to see that option added to the offensive package this season. Can't hurt the w/l record, could it? BTW...glad to hear from you Rick!

Snelly runs out of the I formation with 1 TE and 2 WR. He also will remove the fullback and utilize another TE as a slot receiver (his definition of TE is an extra large, extremely athletic WR). They are under center probably 90% of the time. It's not the most explosive offense in the country, but it does work.

FIU is a spread team with 4 WR and 1 RB.

Troy has been pretty successful in the belt with the spread.

I don't think we are discussing the overall merits of the spread offense. It has shown to be an exciting offense and will probably hang around about as long as the wishbone did until all the defenses figure it out. Then a new offense will emerge...just like it seems to always happen.

What some of us are saying is...no problem with the spread, but is there not some times when it might be beneficial to take a snap from under center? I think so.

And Rick, you were advocate of Dodge being at least the offensive coordinator under Dickey, right? So you are giving up on the offensive system after just two years?

Damn, I was beaten to an over-generalization.

I was really hoping to find a stat somewhere that says if we had been under center on all those X-and-shorts, we would be reveling in our 6-win season righ tnow. Also, it would have magically inspired the defense to never allow a < 6 play scoring drive.

Alas, ESPN doesn't track those.

Somewhere, someway, The Buick is laughing right now.

How many QBs has any run-of-the-mill mid-major program sent to the NFL? Who even cares? We're not a major BCS program. We're not here to serve as a farm system for the NFL, a la Miami or USC. We just want to win games. We aren't doing that. People are sad about this. People that once thought Todd Dodge could run a 3.7 sec 40 on water are now questioning the very system everyone was excited to see. Remember the days of "I'd rather watch us lose throwing the ball than watch the HB dive or draw one more time?" Welp, we've got it!

Balance is the name of the game. We've got Dodge another year or so at least. We should be positive. Being positive helps win games.

Bab, the qb for la la, was in camp at green bay with his mightiness. Spread qb. It's a stretch, I know.

Do you really have to come from a big school to play QB in the NFL?

These gentlemen would disagree:

Tomo Romo - Eastern Ill

Ben Roethlisberger - Miami (Ohio)

Kurt Warner - N Iowa

Jon Kitna - Central Washington

Tarvaris Jackson - Alabama State

Jake Delhomme - Louisiana-Lafayette

Jeff Garcia - San Jose State

Chad Pennington - Marshall

Tyler Thigpen - Coastal Carolina

Joe Flacco - Delaware

David Garrard - East Carolina

11 of 32 starting NFL QBs (slightly more than a third) did not attend a BCS conference school. Hell, six of them didn't even go to a D1 school!

If you are talented and motivated, you can get there. And if you don't have a secret dogfighting business. I think that is important too.

To be fair, the question was, "How many QBs has any run-of-the-mill mid-major program sent to the NFL?" I only count one from each of those schools.

That was more the point I was making, but I see the angle others are taking. There aren't any non-BCS schools that regularly send QBs to the NFL. Whereas programs like USC, Texas, OU, ec have done so consistently. On the flip, that doesn't mean non-BCS schools aren't well-represented in the NFL. Just means it's less common.

Interesting discussion.
