Dodge added a walk-on from Tyler JC...Steven Schwark. It at least gives us four "arms" for this spring (Riley, Nathan and Baine being the others).

From researching it....Schwark played his high school ball at Mesquite Horn.

Don't forget Derek Thompson, QB from Glen Rose TX!

After listening to Coach Dodge's reviews of Derek Thompson,

and watching Thompson's highlight video's last nigth at the Pour House,

Derek Thompson is a great QB that will compete for playing time this

fall. Big proto type QB, 6-4, 200, very strong arm, very accruate,

and does not get sacked much because of his strength. Very good

runner too. Glen Rose HS runs the spread offense, with Thompson

at QB for the past 2 years. Plus, Thompson has attended several of

Todd Dodge's QB programs and football camps.

The football camps are the connection on Thompson's commitment

to North Texas. As other major programs came calling, and there

were many suitors, Derek said no, not interested at all. The other

programs backed off because they knew they had no chance at all

to change his commitment to NT.

Again, SUMG is talking about 4 QBs for spring ball, not the fall.

I hope Thompson is not having to compete for playing time this fall. If he is, that means 3 things: (1) Riley is probably injured. (2) Neither Tune nor Baine are working out. (3) We will have to pull the redshirt off Thompson, meaning Riley and Thompson will both be in their freshman years of eligibility. If Thompson is a legit 1-A starter, I'd rather groom him to become Riley's backup (or at least 3rd string with decent playing time) in 2010, and succeed Riley when he graduates.

Yes, there will be 4 QB's in spring ball, and 5 QB's for the beginning

of the fall. Thompson has been grooming for this opportunity since

his junior year in HS. Several comments last night were very interesting

regarding Derek Thompson. First, Derek actually commited to NT during

during his junior year. Derek has completed several of Coach Dodge's

football camps, where he rated very high scores considering the number

QB's attending these camps. Derek went through two years of evaluations

and was the # 1 QB prospect the staff wanted for the 2009 class.

Several programs approached Derek all year, but Derek said not interested.

Derek only listed NT as his school, so it made him look like a average QB

with no suitors. There were some big schools trying to get their foot in the door.

Redshirting may be a possiblity later on. Coach Dodge and his staff do not

tell a prospect or his family they will redshirt. Coach Dodge and the staff

tell the prospect and their family, their son will compete to play from day one.

The staff demands the player compete, and be ready to go. Any redshirt options

are only considered late into the season. A player can redshirt at any time during

their career at NT. Look at OG Coleman Feely. Due to injuries, Coleman was

ready to go when the team needed him. If Coleman never had a opportunity

to play in 2008, then 2008 could have been a redshirt year. He still has one

year of redshirt to use if needed. No matter what happens, Derek will come

to NT to compete and to play his first year. Derek is a very very good QB!

didn't you guys hear about Derek Thompson?

A. Brilliant

B. Stephen Schwark - Listed at 6'2" -

2007 as a freshman - 9 games played...107 of 146 (73.3%), 1251 yards, 7 TDs 8 INT...28 rushing attempts for 31 yards

2008 as a sophomore - 7 games played...43 of 60 (71.7%), 267 yards, 1 TD 3 INT...31 rushing attempts for 41 yards, 1 TD

Schwark split time in 5 games at QB as a sophomore, but those 267 yards were still good for tops on the team, so I'm guessing Tyler runs the ball a lot.

For those of you who have no clue, let me fill you in:

Thompson is our head coach's son. We just won a battle with West Virginia for the young man's services. Even though he is one of the nation's top recruits, we plan on Yellow shirting him. Yellow shirting is a new NCAA designation. With that designation, the player can sit out a year, as long as he pays his way, and wins a stage of the Tour De France.

Anyone can correct me on anything that I've gotten wrong.

Who does more random drug testing, the International Cycling Union or Todd Dodge?

One addendum- Yellowshirting only works for Tour De France-Cycling BOWL Subdivision teams. In the Playoff subdivision (formerly known as Schwinn-AA), Yellowshirting does not apply.

Why does Dodge refuse to recruit real Dual Threat QB's? His offense, in high school, obviously relies on speed at QB. He converts every one of them, other than his son, into DB's & RB's.

Dual threat is over hyped in Dodge's offense. He has one or two wrinkles using the QB in the running game. A QB draw, a QB read, and occasionally the option. Let's leave Riley in the pocket and let him scramble and get out of bounds to keep him healthy. Running him at QB will not be the answer for him long term.

Getting more QB's in spring ball was imperative. Maybe now we will see some contact and see who can take shots. Its better to know now than during the season, imo.
