Looks like another good hire by Dodge and his staff. May be "older" than most at 60 or 61, but looks like a ton of experience at the college level. Welcome Coach Nelson and don't pay attention to all the negative "stuff" you read on GMG.com. UNT is a program heading in a positive direction. I am sure you can help lead us to many victories in season's to come...starting in 2009! GO MEAN GREEN!

I doubt that he knows of or is concerned with the existence of this board.

In the end we are still a team that is 3-21 in the last two seasons. Yes we still do suck until proven otherwise on the field.

Assistant coaches have to be nomadic to survive. Negative alert, do not read further if offended by semi rational conclusions!

There are hundreds of assistant coaching candidates available with college experience, there are thousands of coaches that would like to coach at the highest level of college football. So there are always good choices for even programs as down as NT is right down. However, just like recruiting, NT is not going to be able to pick from the top shelf. If being in the Belt and not being able to offer anything approaching salaries that are now prevalent in the FB division is not a big enough hurdle, any position on the current NT football coaching staff has got to be viewed as very risky at this point. Up and comming coaches with college experience are just not going to go to this program. So your choices are going to be limited primarily to coaches wanted to move up to the next level with little or no experience or unemployed coaches on the down slope of their career.

Under those circumstances, it looks like Nelson is a good choice. He certainly has the experience not only to coach but to work well with Deloach and Dodge.

I'm glad we hired someone with the credentials of Mike Nelson; it sounds like TD got good advice and followed it on this one. He seems like someone who will stay at one place for a while given the opportunity, and when he did (at Iowa State), showed results.

It all depends on what level they are "up and coming" from. I would guess that any "up and coming" D-II or 1-AA head coach would love the opportunity to be the head coach here. Baliff is going to get hired away from Rice one of these days. I just wish it had been us that he was getting hired away from.

For future reference, our administration should profile Coach Baliff, and his early career, so that we know what sort of "up and comer" to hire next.
