I agree that running up this score is unsportsmanlike. But there are lessons in losing, and an even bigger lesson is losing badly. There's also a lesson of sportsmanship to be learned when on the wrong end of such an ass-whipping.

Then we must all be post doctoral scholars around these parts.

And... ZERO?! Really? They couldn't hit one single shot?

I was wondering about based on the broken clock being right twice a day theory.

I know someone who was at the game (I won't say in what capacity, but wasn't for one side or the other). What he said varied from what was reported by the media, mainly in that: the coach for the winning team played all of his players, and that the winning side wasn't pressing after the first quarter. I find it hard to take one side or the other of the argument, maybe because in the only game in which I played in organized sports, I was sent in off the bench late in the second half (church league game; some of those are fiercely competitive), when we were being shut out, and sank 3 outside jump shots for our only points of the game. If there were some mercy rule, or other anti-competitive policy in place, maybe I wouldn't have that fond memory to look back on. I do, however, think there are a few questions which a reasonable person could ask about the game in question, and the media coverage (storm?) it generated, such as:

1. Dallas Academy is a school designed for high school students with learning disabilities, in which the boys outnumber the girls by something like six to one (the Dallas Academy girls gave up quite a bit of height to those of Covenant, and generally just didn't have the numbers of girls to choose from). Are there really that many more boys than girls with problems such as ADHD and dyslexia? I heard one expert (a neurologist) speak on that question one time. She put forth a theory that there may be as many girls as boys with ADHD, but that it might be manifested as the more "inattentive" rather than "hyperactive" variety, resulting in less overt problems for parents and teachers, and therefore, less treatment for the girls, although they may need it just as much. One point of view suggests that an ADHD individual who "goes into a shell" may be the one who should generate the most concern.

2. There's little to me that justifies the amount of media coverage this story received, other than the presidential inauguration happened on Tuesday, and had lost its "legs" as news by Wednesday, with this basketball game breaking as a national story by Thursday morning, probably due to the Dallas Morning News giving it a front page WRITEUP. So, why did this get all the online and print media attention nationally the way it did? I think that it was because the students and staff at Dallas Academy put enough of a positive spin on the story ("I'm proud of our kids for never giving up", etc) that it constituted what might be considered a feel good story, and hit the news cycle during a time when people may be looking for anything positive they can find. The "Miracle on the Hudson" ditching of the US Air flight was a wonderful story, but there wasn't that much more to be learned about it by late this week, and it had become overshadowed by the inauguration (maybe "subsumed" even, since Obama invited the pilot and his family to the inauguration). I just wonder if, considering that the current economic weakness is anticipated to continue for some time, there's something about these "feel good" stories giving them "legs", even though more significant, but more depressing news, even about sports, might be breaking at about the same time.

Yes, I do think journalism students (of which I have never been one) should use this story to study something; I'm just not sure what it is, other than people are interested in sports and its parallels to character development (or the lack thereof), and that 100 to 0 probably has a certain ring to it.

It's time to move on. Stupid coach to score 100 on a team obviously so "out-manned", but to give the story this much play is somewhat "overkill" in its finest. The "winners" here will certainly be the losing team and its school. You can't pay any amount of money for this kind of press attention. And, the "winning" coach (the coach of the team that scored 100) was FIRED! Must be a real "thinking man" as he posted his comments about the game on a blog. How DUMB does one guy have to be? Maybe he really did want to get fired. It sure seems so. Now, let's all take a breath and give this a rest. I am going to take my own advice and stop talking and posting and reading about this event. Good night all on this one.

Sir, you are correct! Still, it's hard to quit making fun of my coworker for being involved in this game.
