Demario Thomas? What ever happened to him? We were supposed to have the best backfield in the sunbelt when he made it to Denton.

It takes more than physical talent....

Since we are talking about brothers, here is a trivia question. The first one with the correct answer gets a genuine Alien Ale at the first tailgating session this year......that I attend of course.

When was the last time North Texas had brothers starting for us on the football team?

there were two brothers that played linebacker back in 96 or 97. Were they the Perkins brother? Ronald and Donald?

crap, now I'm confused. Not sure what their names are.

It is Fred and Corry Pertile. By the way, is anyone old enough to remember the Hachtel twins out of Decatur. They were considered fairly highly rated recruits. But, for some reason only Glynn stuck with the program. lettering three years from 69-71.

And an Alien Ale goes to MG Insurance Pro and Island Eagle. The Pertile brothers (Cory and Fred) is correct. They played from 97 to 2000.

Island, I went to High School with the Hachtel twins (they were identical twins btw). Actually, when they came out of High School Glenn went to North Texas and Lynn went to SMU...on a ship of course. Lynn later transferred to North Texas but never played, and I'm not sure why unless his old knee injury kept coming back. Glenn went on to start for three years at LB. Glenn died of cancer a few years ago. He was coaching at a school in Denton at the time.

The Hatchel twins puts me in mind of how coaches used to have to coach...especially with limited resources.

When the twins started playing football in Jr High, Lynn played QB and Glenn played FB. When they got into HS they were both playing RB and LB. At the end of their Jr. year they both had knee injuries that needed pretty extensive re-hab. The coach (Bill Davis) assessed that Glenn's injury prevented him from taking the constant pounding at FB, so he had him slotted to play guard and LB. Lynn could continue playing RB and LB. Coach Davis put a former all-district guard at FB, and the starting QB from the previous JV team started at QB. This worked for only one game. The coach then ask Glynn if he wanted to give it a try at QB (Glynn was an outstanding all-around athlete), and at the same time the starting TE asked to be given a shot at FB. Well this combination proved to be a winner. Glynn acclaimated himself to the QB role (including becoming an outstanding passer) the TE turned out to be our version of former Cowboy Don Perkins (always good for two or three yards), and all was well until our WB went down in the second game. Well, Coach Davis then inserted the other all-district guard at WB and he turned out to be one of the best pass catchers in the backfield.....besides the fact that he was an outstanding blocker.

So Decatur wins district with a QB that had never played the position before, a FB that had never played the position before, and a WB that had never played the postion before. All of them ended up being all-district (or honorable mention) at their positions. This combination worked very well until the second round of the play-offs when we (once again) faced Plano.

Corkey Nelson did similar things when he was a coach. When he was the Head Coach at Tyler he moved his starting LB (Earl Campbell) to RB. His most notable position move at North Texas was to take a JC linebacker and put him at nose tackle. Rex Johnson ended up becoming an all-american at that position.

This spring our current coaching staff needs to do some similar assessment/re-evaluation with the current pool of players....starting with QB.

In usual "you just never know" recruiting, Cory was supposed to be the stud and Fred was just thrown in the deal.

Fred ended up being all-conference (2nd team?) and Cory was the throw in.

Which is why i leave recruiting up to the...."experts".
