La Tech Vs Northern Illinois

This game could be as exciting as TCU & Boise, so I won't miss it. I turned on the tube the other night a little late to watch TCU/Boise ST and Boise was ahead 13-0, so I switched over to the Mavs, which I now deeply regret. The Independence Bowl has had a history of exciting games, though they do not shake up the standings. No stellar records here, but it still could be a bowl game that you may read about and wished you had watched just from a football fan perspective. Northern Illinois (6-6) completed one of the best turnarounds in college football this season under first-year coach Jerry Kill, after winning just two games in 2007. The Bulldogs (7-5) played their way into their first bowl game since 2001 by winning five of their last seven games. Watching it could give all the Mean Green Nation some hope for our future. Hey Fake Lonnie Lynch, this game is right up your alley!

Anybody going to the Armed Forces Bowl Wednesday?

I really like Kill. He's only 47, but has 15 years of college experience, wins almost 65% of his games, and makes $300,000 a season. Maybe not out of our range? If next season doesn't work out, I'd like our school to take a good look at him.

As I watch this game and the previous bowl games the last few nights is the speed and the defenses.

UNT needs to sign every darn defensive player that is worthly of a scholarship. I would go JUCO all the way and search all over the south and southeast.

Defense wins these games and speed kills. You see that kick off return by LA Tech, we have no one with that kind of speed except maybe Jamaal Jackson (maybe).

Defense would win us a lot of games and at least keep the mean green close.

Tech has good attendance. As for ULL, I think it is the great conference they are affiliated with that kept them out of this one.

Well the Belt did go 3 - 0 vs the MAC this year... It would be like SMU having a say by wanting to invite say a 6-6 Toledo team to play in the Ft Worth bowl instead of a 6-6 UNT team.

Wait what have I been smoking... thinking SMU and UNT could both be bowl eligible in the same year

Now I wish Tasty was around this month. I'd love to know if it's ever happened. Would probably have been pretty far back. Didn't SMU play pretty mediocre ball from the 50s through the 70s?

1948 - SMU beat Oregon in the Cotton Bowl and NT lost to Nevada in the Salad Bowl. SMU is 4-6-1 all time in bowl games and we are 2-5.

Yeah, We need more speed, on the offense and the defense, but our offense don't use a fullback and Kill's does. Using a tight end is a great start, but we must add fullback sets also. At some point every team needs to be able to line up and run with power (especially inside the 10 yard line). The threat is needed to keep defenses honest. Without more balance, NT will have a harder time getting where we all want it to be.
