Poor Freethrow Shooting

Poor FT shooting has caused Shaq 5,000 career points and numerous spots on the scoring list. NT needs to shoot FTs better.

We're shooting about 70% for the year - hardly bad. And as of acouple of days ago we were in the top 5 of both attempted and made Free throws of any school in the country.

What did we end up shooting in the ULL game? When I tuned out we were at 20% from the stripe.

UNT is currently shooting 68.7% for freebies, ranking 158 out of 343 D1 teams. It is great(really great) that they are getting to the line so often, but that doesn't make them a good FT shooting team. Link

I think the biggest complaint regarding FT shooting is that JJ's teams seem to have a hard time with FTs in the late stages of games in order to put teams away or seal wins. I know I have seen several games over the past few years that were blown due to poor late game FT shooting.

Does anyone know of any website that breaks down stats in depth, such as FT% in the last 5-10 minutes of games. I would be very interested in seeing that.

We were over 70% before the ULL game(we only shot 48% from the line in that one and brought our average down). Even so, we're in the top half of the country. While that isn't great by any stretch, we're hardly this terrible FT shooting team like the urban legend suggests.

This year I would say we generally are shooting BETTER in late game situations while we're trying to close out games.

The biggest reason that we may be doing better with late game FTs is that Josh White is a great FT shooter and he does the majority of the ball handling with the game on the line. I'm more confident in this year's team's ability to seal late game wins with FTs almost soley because of him. He may be struggling right now, but he is clutch from the FT line.

Just calculated, and UNT's FT% drops to 65.2% and ranks 243 out of 343 without White.

ULL and SHSU at home were both pathetic games from the line. We're not a very big team though...they should be doing better than this. Let's hope they're practicing over the break
