I've got to think Gill to Iowa State, would be a great move for the Cyclones. He's still a legend in nearby Nebraska. Plus, if he can recruit to Buffalo...he can recruit to Ames, Iowa.

I agree. And can you imagine the reaction in Auburn, AL when Gill is turning around the Iowa State program at the same time Chizik is driving Auburn's into the ground?

This was an interesting mention in the article:

Others to watch include ... Middle Tennessee coach Rick Stockstill, ...

I wonder why MTSU coach gets the nod and not Troy's from the Sun Belt.

Why the hell would anyone consider a guy winning in the MAC?

It's better than 0-7 in the SunBelt!

If Iowa State doesn't re-hire Dan McCarney or someone else with Iowa/Iowa State/Northern Iowa ties, they're fools. Their AD is an idiot anyway for letting McCarney go in the first place. Hopefully, his second hiring will be as bad as his first and he will be fired as well.

Anyway, to me the more salient part of the article was this:

Changes coming on the bayou?

Most expect LSU's Les Miles to select a new defensive coordinator. Current co-coordinator Bradley Dale Peveto is a candidate for the head-coaching post at Northwestern State (La.), and fellow co-coordinator Doug Mallory likely would stay at LSU in some capacity. So would Peveto, if he doesn't land the Northwestern State job.

There it is. An I-A/FBS-level coordinator considering a I-AA/FCS post. It's like I've said before, coaches want to become head coaches. There are some here that wring their hands with all of the "who would take this job if Todd Dodge were fired" baloney. There would be plenty of people from every level of college football interested because a head coaching gig is a chance to earn your stripes.

Absolutely correct. Especially with the facility improvement (new stadium), market, and metropolitan area, UNT would have no problem finding a quality coach IF they chose to let Dodge go.

You are what you think you are.

I don't know what we would do if you weren't here to criticize everyone's AD and their hiring practices. Thank you and Merry Christmas.

Peveto (whom many LSU fans want fired anyway) was once a successful DC at Northwestern State (as well as other schools in the same conference like SFA) and currently recruits the area, so he's naturally a candidate, covering his bases also in case Miles gets the boot or there's shakeups in the staff.

This is far from us pulling a successful assistant out of a successful program somewhere else in the country. I agree on the premise, that a good assistant coach would come here to be our HC (pay raise is important, IMO), but it's not so simple as to point out one guy as an example.

A VALID argument of opposition is that if you go about firing a new HC after two years (deserved though it may be), then the message to a new coach is WIN IMMEDIATELY. And a guy going to his first HC gig might look at us as a current bottom-feeder in college football in every place where it matters and wonder why he the hell he would consider our school and let himself be put in a position to fail. And that is exactly what you do when you invite an assistant in here.

Who qualifies to our school the way Peveto does to Northwestern State? Kenny Evans, who's 1-11 at Northeastern State (Okla)? Bruce Chambers, TE Coach making $175k at UT? Peveto hasn't taken the job yet, anyway. And is he the caliber you're considering to turn this around?

I mean, we have had some Div 1A assistant coaches at various positions in our own coaching staff, and their performance has been pretty questionable, so it's not like they're not gambles in their own right. The two most important things for a HC in my opinion? Putting together a staff and recruiting. You do those things, you win. You struggle doing either of those things, you fail.

Turner Gill would not take the Iowa State job anyway. Someone who knows Iowa needs to be at the Iowa State job. They had a guy there, Dan McCarney. A new AD came in and fired him. The new guy was a joke.

McCarney had a losing season in 2006. Five of the six seasons prior to that, he had Iowa State in bowl games. The Cyclones have appeared in nine bowl games in 119 years; McCarney led them to five of those. He is the only ISU coach to ever lead the Cyclones to a bowl victories. They hadn't even been to a bowl game in 22 seasons before McCarney led them to their first ever bowl win in 2000.

The young, newfangled Iowa State athletic director is getting what he deserves for giving the ax to a man who was loyal to Iowa State. McCarney was born in Iowa played for the Iowa Hawkeyes and coached 12 of his first 13 seasons there under Hayden Fry. He then became the defensive coordinator for fellow Fry coaching staff almunus Barry Alvarez.

No man was more the fit for the ISU job than McCarney. Since being fired by the idiot AD, he's coached the defensive line for South Florida and Florida. He with the Gators now preparing for their tilt with OU in the national title game. It would be fitting if Florida's DL were to shut down OU's offense.

The sad thing is, McCarney gets no joy from ISU being torn down. I hope they have sense enough to rehire him - or fire the idiot AD who tossed him aside and hire someone who will. For what he accomplished at a school known for decent basektball, but losing football, he deserved better than to have some snotnosed punk throw him out. To see that AD up there yesterday and today talking about betrayal and whatnot...what nerve that punk has. It's his own fault ISU is in this mess to begin with. Sanctimonious twit.

Not to torture logic that already looks stretched to me, but why is it sad that this fellow McCarney takes what sounds like "the high road". It sounds like at this point that (a.) he's not bitter, and (b.) he's enjoying professional success. Maybe he's enjoying the best revenge, "living well".

He's from Iowa and has lots of family there. Different than say, Dennis Franchione, who probably got a little bit of a "serves you right" feeling while watching the Aggies tank this year. Dennis appears to be like many coaches who have no loyalty to places they've been. McCarney would have stayed at ISU until he retired. And, he'd have continued to do a great job. It probably hurts him to see the program he worked long and hard to build up torn down by that the nitwit running the athletic department now and the carpetbagging Chizik walking away after doing nothing for two years.

McCarney is a great coach and a great man. The other two are chiselers. It would be justice if the AD makes another crappy hire amd gpt canned for it in a couple of years, and if Auburn continues to slip in stature. Tommy Tuberville was a good man and coach, too. Auburn fans are correct to question their AD for both firing Tuberville and hiring Chizik.

Everything you said above makes sense to me. The reason I replied to your earlier post was your statement "The sad thing is, McCarney gets no joy from ISU being torn down". That, to me, sounded like it would be a happier thing (in your opinion) if he were joyful about ISU's apparently bleak football prospects. I can certainly think back on some negative experiences I had with some faculty, staff, or students at North Texas during my time there (I'm not claiming that I was always in the right, mind you), but I can't recall hoping the worst for any of those persons, and certainly not for UNT.

Two points: 1) The message should be to WIN IMMEDIATELY. Why can't we aspire to that? Why do we have to just sit back and take losing? Not to mention, this is the message to just about every other college coach when he takes a HC job.

2) Someone coming here knowing that we are a bottom feeder would also know that improvement would be that much easier. How many on this board would be happy with a 5 win season next year? How many with 4?

I think that if RV had decided to let Dodge go, coaches would have been beating down the door to get this job because of the upside/potential of this program.
