TWU worried about UNT takeover?

Today's DMN has an article about some Universities wanting to set their own tuition. It talks about a wish list local schools have for this year's funding by the Texas Legislature.

One interesting item on TWU's wish list was: "Maintaining the university's independence from UNT or other state university systems". Hummm....think they've heard something or see the future writing on the wall??

The wish lists:

University of North Texas:

• More funding for administration of the UNT System

• Debt service assistance for the construction of the new UNT Dallas campus

• $4 million for UNT's new engineering college

Texas Woman's University:

• Maintaining the current level of financing, including special funding TWU receives for its large nursing program

• Maintaining the university's independence from UNT or other state university systems

In looking at the wish lists, everyone else is looking to maintain programs they already have. UNT is wanting more money to grow.

laugh.gif I guess people may be seeing TWU (in Denton) as the step child to UNT, since they're wanting to keep their independence from UNT.

From what I've heard, costs of an education in Texas are going to get higher no matter what, with a dramatic increase on the horizon... ph34r.gif

Those TWU women and their alums will go down fighting to the bloody end to keep this from happening which is one BIG reason I do not see a merger between UNT and TWU. The closest that came to happening was in the mid 1980's when Larry Temple and his Select Committe on Higher Education made a study (and suggestion) that TSU and UH down in Houston merge and that TWU merge with UNT and neither had a snow ball's chance in hell after constituencies from both Texas Southern and Texas Women's bombard our state capitol with their presence and said "hell no, we won't go (with your idea of a merger)! blink.gif

Yes, a merger makes sense (cents), but no, it won't happen IMHO.

I've often heard one of the reasons behind the name change to UNT from NTSU was anticipation of merger of the two schools. Since TWU started allowing men undergrads a few years ago, I can't see the validity of their argument for the need of a all women college. Since they have gone co-ed, I think it only make fiscal sense to merge the two schools.
