Nt's Recruit On The March

I believe before the recruiting season is over NT will have assembled a good recruiting class to meet our needs.

I have 8 commits at this time ...divided equally between 4 offensive and 4 JC (2 of which are 3*ranked recruits.)

Offensive: WR Daniel Mayberry

WR Jamaal Jackson

QB Derek Thompson...I had predicted he would pick a QB

C Nick Leppo SLC...he is attending NT this fall as a gray shirt and will count as an 09 ship

Defense: CB Hilbert Jackson

LB Anthony Charles 3*JC

DE Ryan Boutwell...described as a "beast"

DT Shavod Atkinsin 3* JC.

I was wrong on Jackson..he is a 2*

I will try to recap NT's recruiting efforts on the DL:

In any analysis keep in mind we do not know all of the offers NT has made....at this time we know of only 44 offers by NT. Also keep in mind that DT is one of the hardest postions in football to fill with quality players.

Obviously 7 players with offers from NT are committed to North Texas and on 17 others we are still in the running.

NT has recruited and made offers to: 7 JC DT and one DE. All 8 of these were 3* .

The DE committed to SMU, NT has a commit from one (Atkinsin) , one went to UAB, another to N Carolina State, one is between NT and UAB both offers (he's from the gulf area of Texas so we at least have a good shot at him. , One has 7 offers including NT, Illinois, Kansas, UAB, S.Florida, and Louisville..I doubt we get him, another has offers from NT, Boise State, Utah but committed to La Tech, another is between NT and Louisville. this guy is a stud...we can always hope...summary we are still in the running for two...who knows we can hope to get one of them. Again...there may be others I am not aware of. Just wanted you to know NT has been seriously recruited DT's against some stiff competition.

Just for other quality prospects...it is between NT and UAB for a 3* JC CB. Sorry to keep coming back but remember we have a commit from a 3* LB who had offers from Ks, KState, Fresno State and S. Florida.

Pretty sure you got 5 years to play four, so if he was enrolled for the fall symester, he would only have 4 years left. i think. maybe.

My understanding is that a medical "redshirt" results in 6 years to play four. As to any greater detail on that issue, I tried to figure it out one time, but my brain exploded.

Here's the rule: You have five years to play four after attending the first class of a long semester. You can redshirt by sitting out during one of those five years, or you can automatically receive a medical redshirt if you are injured and have played in 3 games or less during the first half of the season. Medical redshirts only require verification from a doctor or the school's training staff and are approved automatically by the conference.

The NCAA does handle this regulation for independent schools (that are not in a conference) but it is always approved if it fits the simple criteria.

For North Texas, the ONLY time the NCAA needs to approve a medical redshirt is when it alters the five years to play four rule. The NCAA seldem approves a sixth year (around 23%), and it's usually reserved for sixth year players that either missed two whole seasons, or were injured in the first game of one season.

if you grey shirt you usually go to a juco for a semester and then enroll for spring practice and you still have your redshirt year available to use

Grey shirt means the student is enrolled in school but, is not on a athletic scholarship. Therefore, the year does not count against his eligibilty. Usually , these kids are put on scholarship at semester.

Sorry OT but the 3* LB had only one offer and that was from UNT per Rivals and his coach

As usual if I am not correct I fully expect someone to let me know. I double checked my info and rivals shows a verbal to NT which means an offer (which he accepted during his visit to NT ) and Interest from Oklahoma......somewhere in my large stack of notes I pulled up the wrong information.

Damn it! I only see us competing with SMU and Baylor on one recruit, which ended up verbally committing to SMU. Oh the humanity! B)
