Current South Alabama coach Ronnie Arrow has a shady past (when it comes to NCAA rules violations).

Anyway, a little blurb in today's DMNews notes that TAMU--Corpus Christi is fighting allegations of "NCAA rules violations, including use of ineligible players, recruiting violatons in men's basketball and lack of institutional control."

The alleged violations, eight of them major, occurred between 2004 and 2008.

Maybe this explains why we've lost out on some Dallas area kids to South Alabama.

Has the NCAA put anyone on probation recently? There always used to be one SEC school on probabtion in football at the very least. It seems as though the the NCAA has lost their will as of late.

Indiana and Mr. Sampson?

The vast majority of penalties were self inflicted by IU itself. And the NCAA gave them no postseason ban.

But, I'll give the NCAA that one I suppose.

USC is on probation and lost a Heisman because Reggie Bush took cash...oh wait; the NCAA gave up.

OU is on probation because of Big Red auto....wait, nevermind.

But on the flip side; the NCAA is still vehemently investigating whether schools should have to change from their Native American inspired mascots.

Fresno State is on probation until 2010 thanks to Tark

Tarkanian couldn't run a clean program if you threw him in a swimming pool full of purell. The man could sure win though. In the long run, that seems to trump everything doesn't it? I am utterly amazed that he was able to take both LBSU and UNLV to national prominence. Neither school was exactly a powerhouse before he showed up, and both suffered from his dirty pool in the end.

After he left Long Beach State, its basketball program was slapped with probation for recruiting violations which occurred under his watch.
Perry's involvement triggered yet another NCAA investigation, which ultimately resulted in the NCAA banning the Rebels from the 1991 NCAA Tournament only months after they won the title. However, the NCAA later agreed to a compromise which allowed UNLV to defend its title, but would see the Rebels banned from the 1992 tourney. Only a few months after UNLV's 1991 loss to Duke, three of Tarkanian's players were seen in a hot tub with Perry--some years after Tarkanian claimed he'd warned off his players for contact with him. School president Robert Maxson had seen enough, and forced Tarkanian to announce he would resign at the end of the 1991-92 season.

But of course, he was innocent of all charges

After being fired from the Spurs, Tarkanian sued the NCAA, claiming it had harassed him for over two decades. The harassment, Tarkanian claimed, started when he wrote a newspaper column alleging that the NCAA was more willing to punish less-prominent schools than big-name schools. Although the NCAA did not admit harassing Tarkanian, it settled out of court in 1998, paying him $2.5 million.

ETA -- Tarkanian's LBSU teams of 1971-73 made the elite eight twice and the regional third place once. All three were later vacated by the NCAA.

I will never forget when he autographed my Fresno State fanny pack as a kid in the Fresno Airport. Ya, he never had much success with us. Couple 20+ win seasons, 1 Sweet 16 (somehow), and attracted lots of pre-season hype for us.

At least he sort of paved the way for us to get the suh-weet Save Mart center on campus. Playing in "downtown" Fresno at Selland Arena was horrible...yet I always remembered years of checking the box score and seeing attendance : 10,220 ( a sell out)

But hey, here's to better times. We nabbed two great recruits last year and signed our first ESPN 100 this year thanks to Lute leaving UA.

I will never forget the personal hell we created for him when he showed up for a UNLV-UCI game shortly after being fired from the Spurs.

No, Fresno State is on probation because Fresno State hired Tark. They knew what they were getting and the risk involved.
