is there history behind it being shot off at the end of every quarter?

it makes sense to fire it off when we score but it seems like the only reason to shoot it between quarters is either history or a bored crew wanting to scare everyone so they can get their laughs in. it's not even one of those things where you jump and then laugh about it, instead you jump and think, "well, we're down by 20...that was ridiculous"

and while we're at it, what's the deal with whole crowd yelling "first down" every time we get a first down? I mean, we hardly get any these days so whenever we do, it almost sounds like we're all excited just to get a first down which is kind of pathetic because I mean you'd never see that at like Texas or somewhere else just at UNT. sigh.

Are you sure about that? I believe that TT does it, among others. This is not something that we are alone on.

Because it is FUN!

It is probably one of the few "whole crowd" participation things we have. I think that is always a good thing!

I can't think of a football game I've ever attended at the high school or college level that did not have the announcer leading the crowd in yelling "first down!"

just. a. joke.

We seem to be finding any and everything we can to complain about in the aftermath of another abortion of a season so I thought I'd find something fun and make it not fun. In jest.

Sorry, 1855. I'm a little tense and defensive after this season.

No worries, text isn't an ideal medium for sarcasm. ha, and with some of the things people have thrown out in the past few weeks, for all you know I could have been dead-serious.

Hooray basketball!

Our stadium announcer told me he borrowed the idea from now retired NFL ref (and before that SWC ref) Red Cashion. Here is his Wikipedia entry.
