I wanted to notify everyone of a very rare rival showdown that is going to happen within a drivable distance to the metroplex between two district schools for the third round of the 6 Man playoffs this weekend. Gordon vs Strawn will play in Mineral Wells' new football stadium saturday night. If you have never seen a 6 man game before this would be a great opportunity to possibly see a good one and it's fairly close by. I believe Gordon easily won the regular season matchup but since then Strawn has come on very strong. These two towns are well known for their rivalry and are very close to each other. In fact, I have an issue that Sports Illustrated did back in the mid 90's on small time Texas HS fooball, and there was a chapter dedicated to this rivalry between the two towns.

I don't know why the UIL doesn't at least have some of these closer schools come and play closer to the metroplex. I think many city people who have never seen a 6 man game before would get a kick out of it? It would be great if they could somehow let these kids play in Texas Stadium for a chance but I realize the field being smaller would require them to temporarily re-line the field and maybe cause a problem?

Anyhow, if you get a chance after our game this would be a great one to see. I'm definately going because it's only a short drive from the house and I haven't had a chance to see a 6 man game in many years.

Strawn got their payback last night with an 89-58 win over Gordon and it was a great game up until the very end when Strawn went up by two scores with about 5 minutes to go. Halftime score was 45-44 with Strawn leading. I bet there was possibly 3 to 4,000 in attendance which is pretty good considering neither school has 150 kids between the two of them? Lots of folks from all over. Very entertaining game. This was the Div I, region III final.

Just an update. Strawn beat Abbott last night in Glen Rose, 102-70 in the 6 man Div I semi. Strawn will now play for the state championship next week. An interesting note about the Strawn vs Abbott game, both teams are coached by twin brothers, Kyle and Brent Dawson.

I went and watched Albany beat Archer City last night in Mineral Wells. One of my favorite parts about small time football is during halftime, as both teams run off to the lockerroom, there's always one or two players, maybe more who run the other direction over to the sideline and start stripping off their shoulder pads and helmets, and join a couple of cheerleaders as well, and run out onto the field with instruments to play the halftime show.

I love me some small town football.

Man, Abbott gets past Calvert last week only to have to face Strawn?

Didn't 45 them, but 102 points....would have loved to seen that game.

My cousin played at Abbott, and is now a Baylor student (non-athlete). Calvert was the one his team could never get past.
