Phillip Fulmer is stepping down as head coach at TN. He gets 6 million dollars over the next 4 years.

I don't know about "performing less than expected" since he won a national championship. But the ship has been sinking of late.

In addition to a national championship, he also had 14 winning seasons in the last 15, won 10 games in 2007 and 9 games in 2006. Tennessee appeared in the SEC title game in 2007, having won their division, the seventh time Fulmer had them in the title game.

This is more about "what have you done for me lately" than poor performance. "Lately" being this month.

Don't misunderstand, I am not a Tennessee fan, my wife went to LSU and we follow LSU. Fulmer being forced out tells a lot about the competitive pressures in the SEC.

Vanderbilt must be a great place to coach. You get SEC money, but not the level of week to week pressure one would get at the LSUs or Tennessees of the world.

Yeah, Fullmer is pathetic. He's barely won more than 3/4 of his games over the last 16 years. He even had a losing season (5-6) in the process and it's possible that he'll have another this season. But, to force him out is ridiculous. Those with deep pockets should be forced to have to live on a small budget for a few years. Then they might appreciate what they have.

That's wrong, too, because RV doesn't have the sense to fire him. Therefore, it would take someone with sense enough to let them both go at the same time. Neither the Board nor Bataille seem to have enough sense to do it, though.

Most definitely. And I know Briles would be pulling a Graham to leave after one year, but he would be crazy not to take the Tech job if offered. I know the chance to coach in the Big 12, and also the money, is why Briles took the Baylor job. I would have thought he would wait out the Tech job for at least a couple of years. I cannot imagine him being able to recruit the skill position players to Waco to make the offense work as well as it does at tech and at Houston. I think, and hope, that June Jones will have the same challenge at SMU over the long haul.

Briles appears to be doing fine with 14 commitments so far. Of those five are offensive linemen, three are defensive linemen. Two are "four star" recruits. Two run sub-4.5 40s. Two are from Dallas areas schools.

Commitments and them gaining admission academically are two different things. For example, 90% of Rice's recruits cannot meet admission requirements to the school. That is just the challenge of coaching at a private school, and I realize Baylor is not Rice. Briles getting that done on a consistent basis, and copying the success of Tech at Baylor will be a challenge year in and year out. One thing that is his favor is that Morris had switched to the spread the last couple of years.

It hasn't stopped Drew from turning around Baylor's basketball program. Baylor's not near as tough to gain entrance to as Rice.

The BIG XII is a pretty tough place for coaching too...but, isn't every conference? Look at the folks on this board after Dodge. Think that's any different when all things are considered? It is a "what have you done for me lately" profession and the folks making their careers in coaching know it. Still does not mean it isn't tough to get fired...and make no mistake about it, Fulmer did not leave because he wanted to leave...just take a look at Fulmer's announcement tape.

Kram, Leach has mixed it up in the SEC. Remember, when Stoops hired him, Leach was at Kentucky. Stoops said at the time it was because Leach's offense gave him fits while he was at Florida.

Yes, Lifer, I agree about Drew. And yes Baylor's adm stds are not as tough. But some of these private schools football programs are just little dogs, nipping at everybody's heals, and pulling an upset or two every once in a while. They don't bite hard on a consistent basis. I just do not see Briles being as successful in Waco as he could at Tech.

Yep, I recall that Leach was at Kentucky, but thought he was an assistant at the time. Was he the haed coach at kentucky? I was meaning "mixing it up" as a head coach. Might be fun to see, huh?

Not head coach, but offensive coordinator. Most rumored job for him is Washington, because he is from Wyoming and his personality would be a better fit in Seattle. As I put in an earlier post, there is a website, and it has been there for a couple of months, that is campaigning for Muschamp from TX to be the new head coach at TN. Guess it would be because of his playing days at Georgia, and being the coordinator at Auburn.
