I don't know about the number of games with 12 or fewer first downs but the last of four years of Dickeyball the average number of first downs per game (excluding penalties) was 13.2. In the 20 games of Dodgeball (with only 3 wins) they have average 20.9 first downs per game by running or passing. That's almost a 60% improvement. Yep, that's really boring.

And that's good for another Mean Greeeeeeeeeeen................ First down!.

I wouldnt say that I am bored with the spread but I am old school when it comes to my football. I loved the old option attacks and I love watching old college football games on Classic. and I love watching Georgia Tech this year. Everybody said they wouldnt be sucessful but look at them they are leading the ACC. To me with the spread the game as evolved into 7 on 7. All these guys throw 40 passes right around the line of scrimmage and everyone thinks they are great for completing 75% of their passes. Stats dont mean as much as they used to.

I would lot rather see a Cobbs or JaMario rushing for 200 yards then Vizza throwing for 300 yards.

Tech runs a pretty wide variety from under center. No clue why Harrell's dad may have said that. Their first TD against Kansas was a 50 yard deep strike from under center, so it's not even exclusively a short yardage thing... this (among other reasons) is why Tech's spread is very different from ours.

Also, I'm going to differ on the looking to the sidelines every play as being "part of the spread." Honest question here, as I don't claim to know for sure -- who else does that, especially as consistently as we do???

I saw Harrell 'almost" under center ... He stood diretly behind the center but was facing about 45 degrees to his left (not forward) reaching under center. Weirdest thing I've ever seen.

Thank You. I know that I'm not supposed to say anything positive about Dickey on this board, but the folks that complain about Dickey offense always refer to the losing seasons. When Dickey offense was winning, it was exciting to watch. My point is NOT that I am tired of Dodge's offense BUT that I am tired of the SAMENESS of offenses in college football today. I for one will be excited when these new offensive coordinators begin experimenting with "new" offenses that involve the triple option. Remember Corkey Nelson's wide open wishbone spread attack...or Bone and Shoot...whatever he called it?!! Now that was exciting!

The more I watch college football, the more I wonder if anybody anywhere has offensive huddles anymore. Hell, that was half the fun of playing the game!

"Alright guys, we're gonna' do a right fake screen. Got it? Good. Did you see that blond in the stands? I think she's making eyes at you Steve!"

By the way, if one is bored with the sameness of offenses in college football, pro football must make them lifeless.

Well, we could get around 13 and watch the other team get 20 per game.

Actually, I'll say it again. I don't get my jollies watching our offense be good, although that is a plus... I love seeing our defense totally humiliate and demoralize an opponent. Of course, we haven't been close to that for a few years, but god was that fun to watch.

What do you think that old front four of Awasom, Kennedy, Pruitt, and Daniels would do for this current team?

Imagine what kind of numbers our offense could be generating if we could force the other teams to consistently go three and out.

Deloach and his staff are going to fix the defense. He currently has some undersized overachievers playing but he lacks the big horses that can dominate.

But.....what is going to happen with special teams? They are a mess and they've provided momentum for our opponents all season.

Are you implying that there might be some sort of... For lack of a better term, 'troubling issue' on the special teams? Would you suggest that we... 'correct' that troubling issue?

What drives me nuts is the lining up, getting set, then everyone standing up and looking at the sideline...ON EVERY DOWN! I understand that's the way the spread "works", but how 'bout a going on a quick count or no count occasionally? Seems like you could catch the defense flat footed every once in a while.

I think its funny that some of the biggest complaints about the new play clock rules are coming from spread coaches. The same guys who talk about about getting in a fast tempo and keeping defenses on their heels have been exposed for NOT having a quick tempo.

To this day one of the best, most entertaining offenses I have ever seen. Some times they would line up 4 or 5 recievers wide. Sometimes the I formation, sometimes the wishbone and run the triple option out of it. Remember Scott Davis throwing for 400 yards against Texas in '88, and then two years later running for over 200 against SMU?

Great stuff.

Yes, the Bone and Shoot certainly does sound offensive.

I think it has alot do with the smashmouth feel. Spread offenses have a finesse feel. I loved watching NT pound their opponents back in the day.

Dickey's winning teams did not have exciting offenses. He was still running the same damn draw on third and long. It's just those of us who bothered to notice also bit our tongue...because we were winning anyways.

This offense has an outstanding ypc, and the conservative passing game makes everything on the box score look just fine and dandy. It's just a bore to watch because we don't have the big play...not even an occasional one like we saw Cobbs/Galbreath/Thomas doing every now and then during the title years.

It also helped that during the 4 year run we had one of the best play-action QBs North Texas has ever been afforded in Hall. It's not a complicated play, but when you run the ball effectively it makes it pretty darn effective...and exciting.

Any offense is more exciting when it's putting more points on the board than the other team.

Anyone remember that '02 win over a double-A team? Maybe it was Sam Houston or Hartford...can't remember.

Andrew Smith threw like 8 passes in that game...maybe. They were stacking 10 people in the box, with one man playing way back.. practically a punt return formation. And I don't consider that a stretch to say.

They were daring us to pass. And we almost never did. Up the gut over and over to our Dickey's content. And we won. Pretty handily, IIRC.

That would have been Nicholls State, the last 1-AA team that we've played. The score was 23-0 and I'll be kind and say Nicholls State was not very good. I just remember that the game was pretty boring IMO and I wondered why we struggled so migitily with a not very good 1-AA team.

That was Andrew Smith's first full start and he finished 3 of 7 for 43 yards and no INT's. We had a 16-0 lead going into the 4th quarter.

Crazy boring. People (12,000 for an opening game) were leaving after the 3rd quarter, and we were winning.

Yes that Nicholls St game was very boring. And for the most part during the DD era it was boring, esp. the last 2 years. But the 4 year run was fun and we put up points during that run.

I have to admit sitting in the stands during the Troy game I had the same bored feeling as I did during Dickey ball.

I hate to admit I thought my wife was going to fall asleep during the Troy game. If only UNT was like Euless Trinity and had a haka dance before and after each game, win or lose. Trinity doesn't lose much, though.

I like their haka dance, however Trinity's offense is pretty boring too. Yes, they do win by running over people off left tackle and off right tackle, but it gets old after a few series. Maybe a reverse or halfback pass sometime would help keep the opponent fans awake?

We never have the sleepy time problems at Trinity's games. Plus, they've used a reverse on a kickoff return recently. Maybe UNT could work up to that once receiving the kickoff becomes less boring. On second thought, forget it; kickoff returns have been enough of an adventure for North Texas this year.
