Now that the Rays have tied it, I wonder if they'll push for a rain delay.

EDIT: They didn't have to...MLB made the decision.

Just read that even if the Rays hadn't tied it, Selig wouldn't let the World Series end...

PHILADELPHIA (AP)—Game 5 of the World Series was suspended because of rain in the sixth inning Monday night with the Philadelphia Phillies and Tampa Bay Rays tied at 2 and the field already a sloppy, soggy mess.

“I can’t tell you tonight when we’ll resume,” commissioner Bud Selig said. “We’ll stay here if we have to celebrate Thanksgiving here.”

It might be a day or two, at least, before the Phillies get a chance to wrap up their first championship since 1980. Philadelphia leads three games to one.

There has never been a rain-shortened game in Series history. Whenever this one resumes, it will pick up right where it left off, with the Phils about to bat in the bottom of the sixth.

“The weather tomorrow is supposed to be worse,” said Bob DuPuy, MLB’s chief operating officer.

Carlos Pena hit a tying, two-out single in the sixth for the Rays, and the umpires called it moments later. By then, every ball and every pitch had become an adventure because of the miserable conditions.

If Pena had not tied it, Selig said he would not have let the Phillies win with a game that was called after six innings.

“It’s not a way to end a World Series,” he said. “I would not have allowed a World Series to end this way.”

Tuesday was supposed to be a travel day, if necessary. Instead, the teams will stay in Philadelphia and then head back to Tropicana Field if the Rays win.

Good for him. It would be an embarrassment to Major League Baseball and also, I don't think the Phillie's would want it to end that way. There would always be the question whether or not they really were the best team in 2008.

While I certainly don't think the Series should end on a rain-shortened game, it's nice to see the Commish just changing the rules in the middle of a Series. <_<

MLB should change the rules for the playoffs regarding rain delays, or the rules need to be enforced.

And finished in a tie with no clear winner. I love how the Dallas Burn had more ties than wins or losses.

I watched the press conference after the start of the game delay. The announcers were saying something about that rule being changed this year or last year to give the Commisioner some flexibility when it comes to the World Series.

I am hardly a fan of Selig's, but I don't disagree with his decision. Although in the press conference he made it sound like it was all his staff members' ideas to play the game in the first place (despite the weather forecast being relatively benign at the time), and that he only agreed 'with some trepidation.' Morose old geezer, he is.

I too think its silly to change rules in the middle of something but I think certain situations call for certain actions to be taken. How lame would it be if the Rays hadn't scored and the Phillies won the WS that way? I would feel like any game I watched the whole baseball season from April to now, was a waste of my life that I couldn't get back.
