I commented on this but he hasn't posted it.. basically like someone else said it's not a surprise, when there is the potential to go 0'fer, and no significant gains have seemed to be made In the past season. I can see a lot of decomits forthcoming, just speculation. I really hate to be saying it. Wish things were different.

Just like last year, many many programs went after our recruits.

Looks like to me, Coach Dodge and his staff did a great job with

the 2008 class, even with all the negative recruiting tactics that

was used against North Texas. The number one reason a kid

pledges to a program is because of the coaching staff and not the

win loss record. Good players do draw the attention of other top

programs, so I would say the attention Flax is receiving should be

a compliment to the quality of players the staff recruits. I am sure

the staff is staying in close contact with the current recruits as well

as the commitments that we do not know about. I would bet the number

of prospects for the 2009 class is a greater number than the group

of prospects for the 2008 class. I read that NT has 32 KNOWN offers

out there right now, and no telling how many more offers are on

the table for the 2009 class. Regardless if Flax stays or goes, the

2009 class will be a very good class and will meet the needs of the

team. The staff knows the kids they want. The staff is going

after these kids. The 2009 class will be a winner too!

I just think it is really naive to think that we can sustain a really good recruiting classes not competing in ANY game this year and most games last year. No matter how much a player likes a coaching staff in the end it really matters how the program is progressing and that is usually the wins and losses. We are at a point where we need to start seeing significant improvements and results starting the beginning of next year. If you have offers from comparable or better programs with better just about everything across the board you are more likely to lose those recruits because you are not winning or even keeping it respectable for that matter. If Dodge really manages to have a great recruiting class this year then I will certainly give him his due and props for persuading these kids but I believe this the last class where he can still say he is instilling his own players and we need better facilities because next year will be the start of year 3 and significant improvement is a MUST!

June Jones over at $mu has 14 comitments, 7 of these commitments

are 3 star rated. $mu is looking at 1-11 this season, with their only

win over a bad 1-AA Stephen F Austin. Jones has ofers all over the place,

and will have a very good class for 2009.

So I guess their win loss record affects their recruiting as well.

Sherman at Texas A & M is having a bad year as well as Art Briles

at Baylor, so no kids will go to these schools/coaches because they

are having a bad year. Norte Dame had a terrible year last year,

then Weiss brings in a top 10 class.

Recruiting is selling the coaches, the program, and the school,

not wins and loses.

Their lone win was over Texas State and SMU's last 2 games have actually been very good for their program. They had both Tulsa and Houston on the ropes late in the games before losing. I'd gladly trade them places.

Exactly, they've started to see some progress and be competitive.

June Jones can look at his recruit and say "Hay I have 14 or 15 players in the NFL and I feel that I can make you one"

Sherman can say the same thing look at the players that have moved on the next level. Norte Dame can look at the players that have moved on and also "you will be on TV every game" and I coached at the NFL level and can help you move on. That is what sells the coach to the multi star players.

Agreed, but you have to sell recruits that the coaches, program, and school will obtain significantly more wins than losses while the recruit is there. Jones has turned a weak program into a national competitor before. Briles has had success at Houston. Weis and Sherman are ex-NFL coaches--if they can't sell recruits that they will win at their programs, at least they can sell them that they know what it takes to get to the NFL.

I'm still in the pro-Dodge camp, but repeated serious butt-whoopin's do have an effect on recruiting.

It is my belief that SMU is way ahead of UNT right now. The coach is well known and has a solid reputation in the college ranks. They have all the alumni backing, new and best facilities, location of the school etc. UNT is not nearly there yet. Plus this is June Jones' first year and already halfway through the season we are seeing apples and oranges difference and they are progressing. While UNT has take a steep level down this season. The SMU/UNT is starting to become a little more of a stretch now since we actually are starting to see some progress there along with them having everything we dont have just yet and are a few years away from it.

Flax made a solid commitment to UNT, but has since backed off, saying that his commitment is a soft oral commitment.

Soft and oral should never be in the same sentence.

A key difference is that JJ, Briles and Sherman are in their first year. A first year coach can offer newness, playing time, etc. and can claim that the first year's results (often not very good) and due to the previous regime.

You need to start digging and making progress on the new stadium before it will make much of a difference in recruiting.

Is Dodge a more proven coach at the D1 level or is June Jones? SMU is at the VERY LEAST competitive in their games....we are so far behind in most it is comical.

$mu ahead of North Texas? Newer better facilities?

Geez, have you even looked around the campus at NT?

10 brand new facilities, new training center, new academic center, and the

Mean Green Village to name just a few. The new tennis courts, the

Super Pit vs Moody. Yeah $mu is ahead of North Texas.

The new FB stadium, the Mean Green village complex of at least 10

more facilites in the current plans will make NT the athletic show case

of the North Texas region for years to come.

$mu is 1-o'fer for the season and looks to end at 1-11, really

competive for sure. Too bad $mu can't schedule the same patsies

like Hawaii would schedule.

JJ is nationally known.- his team impressed the heck

out of me when Hawaii played Gerogia in the bowl game.

Coach Dodge, heck nobody has even heard of him, especially here

in Texas, the football recruiting hot bed of America.

Need better coaching- lets call up DC Gary Deloach and tell his

ass off becasue he does not know what he is doing. After all

28 yrs of college coaching, 16 yrs as a DC, numerious all conference players,

top 50 defensive rankings, then comes back to NT a second time, boy is

he stupid. Same for OL coach Spencer Leftwich, what was he thinking?

Lefty certainly helped Tulsa in 4 bowl games, huge offensive number,

numerious all conference players. Come back to NT for a second stint

at NT. Are you kidding me? Why would he do such a thing?

Chuck Peterson, 17yrs at Air Force, and come back to NT. Again?

Clayton George, he is another coach that does not know anything about

WR's. Ex NT star, works the NT receivers and OC Tood Ford, get rid of these

2 also. Just because they helped NT to record setting offensive numbers last

year, with a exciting offense, developed the 1st AA player at NT in God knows how

long, yeah, get rid of these guys too. It is all Coach Dodge's fault for hiring these

guys, and it is all Coach Dodge's fault for bring in 2 top recruiting classes, and for

playing alot of true freshmen, red shirts, and sophmores to build the future.

Heck, fire him too. None of these coaches are working, teaching, developing

these players, much less trying to win games. $mu is passing us, the SBC

teams are passing us, and NT is the worst team in America. Fire them all.

Bring Double D back! Please!
