So who on that list started baseball five years ago and had success? How long did it take them to get to where they are now?

Irvine restarted its program in 2002 after a ten year absence. It made the tourney in 2004 and 2006. It made the College World Series in 2007 and the Super Regionals in 2008.

DBU= Private, Very Small, Expensive (competitive instant they moved to D1)

UNT= Public, Large, Inexpensive (no reason can't be competitive and better than DBU was upon entering D1 (ie starting a program for UNT))
