Students at Texas State University, on which the NT SGA modeled much of its ballot and initiative, pay $10 per semester credit hour for athletics fees. The students there voted in February to increase athletics fees by $2 every year for the next five years, so that they will end up paying $20 per semester credit hour in 2013, Texas State University spokesman Mark Hendricks said.

Students at the University of Houston, however, don't pay any student service fees for their athletics department. Instead, they only pay to use a recreation center, University of Houston officials said.

Students at the University of Texas at San Antonio pay up to $240 per semester for athletics fees.

OK, now for the facts: for the 2004-2005 the University of Houston provided $12,437,318.00 in institutional support to it's athletic programs. Of it's $22,648,933.00 budget that was reported to the NCAA, $8,900,000.00 was in direct institutional support through student service fees and $3,537,318 was through student athletic fees.

For Houston's 32,000 students in 2004-2005, their contribution to athletics per student was an average of $388.66 for the year.

And that was 2004-2005. Their budget has grown since then.

Oh, just in case the Daily is as challenged at math as they are at research, the 2004-2005 per student athletics contribution at Houston is still 30% higher than the maximum in the proposed referendum for North Texas for the 2011-2012 school year.

Oh, and another thing, the University of Houston didn't have to pay for it's stadium either, it was built with city taxes.

It's a very large, vocal group that wants the NO side to win. I hesitate to say just how big, because they're by FAR the most vocal and "showy" in their "beliefs"... i use quotes there because they all seem to have the same beliefs, adopted, quite simply, because it makes them feel "cool".

I don't think the majority of the YES crowd is as showy and vocal. Just my opinion.

As for the NOs, my girlfriend and I call a central block of them (mockingly) the "free thinkers".... standard issue items include black plastic-rim glasses, Mac laptop, eco-friendly items somehow in plain view, car featuring at least one (or possibly both if you hit the jackpot) Apple and Obama sticker, or possibly some snarky "cause" sticker or a reminder to "Eat Local". Anything relating to Austin or Anti-Religion (especially protestantism - not acceptable to bash trendy eastern religions) is also very acceptable. They revel in being anti-establishment, think they're unique & smarter than neanderthal sports fan, yet they all believe the same thing and look the same way.

Look, I'm not saying all NO voters feel this way - not at all. But among this large, visible group at NT, there ain't many yesses... and they're loud about it.

Oh, and 9 times out of 10, you'll never see them on this campus again after graduation, much less expect a check.

That's why I said not all. You're the rare YES in that group. All of those things on their own -- fine. I just giggle that it's become a uniform.... and yeah, safe bit of profiling that they're 90%+ NO.

Chill out, pal. If the rest of your comment were a public statement, you'd probably lose YES votes with that. I'm planning to vote Obama, don't much like organized religion, mainly since the major religions are particularly in your face and have started one major conflict or another (I don't remember Buddhism starting a war),

I would get a Mac, but I'm cheap and can get the same performance out of a PC, though I don't wear glasses.

Aside from the other generalizations, I'm with this one. It's also the same people who are really just looking out for themselves, even when many of them won't even be here to be charged that amount of money for the fee. The same people voting "No" would also probably tell you they're all about what's best for other people. In this case, a "Yes" vote benefits all the student athletes, the university image, and the students as a whole.

I'm not indicting these folks personally. Not at all. I have no problem if anyone does ANY of the above things.... well, except for the Mac sticker, but that's another story.... I just find it funny that there's such a standard issue uniform with certain groups on campus, and I get driven bonkers by people who use causes as a trendy social tool and not because it's what they really believe or are informed about, but beacuse it's "cool" to believe.... all while they scream "individuality!"

I have any friends who fit ALL of the above categories. I've just been forced to hear a LOT of strong NO drivel from these folks lately. A LOT.

Yeah, it may be profiling to presume how certain groups will generally vote on an issue... but that doesn't mean it ain't accurate. Trust me, on this vote, "Eat Local" guy (who wants you to KNOW he eats local - just look at his shirt!) is NOT our friend.

What can I say -- I'm stressed right now. Didn't mean to offend anyone. I have no problem with any of the above beliefs, fashion choices, or desperate needs for attention -- I'm just talking about THIS VOTE - That's it.

As for the wars based on religion stuff, I could spend the next hour responding to that (just got out of a Sociology of Religion midterm), but then the ladies wouldn't keep their hands off me, so I'll hold off.... Love you all. Vote Yes please.

Black rim glasses? As far as I'm concerned anyone that wears glasses is the enemy....... unless they finally get around to perfecting those glasses that correct colorblindness.

Apple anything? Worthless.

Obama stickers? Isn't that guy a radical Muslim? Radical Muslims hate sports and freedom.

Anti-Religion? If more people in this world loved football half as much as Jesus, Fouts would have been replaced long ago. Just look at his zeal for sport.....jesus_football.jpgjesus-football.jpg

So am I to assume that from those photos we have indeed confirmed that Jesus was a quarterback? I mean he IS handing the ball off there. I KNEW it!

Jesus played both ways and was more than willing to do whatever was necessary for the good of the team.
