UNT Students Asked to Help Fund New Luxury Football Stadium

DENTON (WBAP) - UNT students are being asked this week to help fund a new luxury football stadium for the Mean Green. A record turnout is expected through Friday, when the voting ends.

Students would pay $7 per semester credit hour overall. Fees would be capped at 15 hours, or $105 per semester. Students would start paying the new fees once the stadium is finished, which is projected for 2011.

It's a hot topic on with UNT students - whether they were aware of the election or not - with many on both sides of the issue.

"I'm already broke," said UNT freshman Orine Henderson "I'm living paycheck to paycheck, so I wouldn't have the expense to do so."

"They're not winning, so it's not going happen," said UNT junior Rodney Davis. "Nobody gives money to somebody whose losing."

University officials, however, are sticking by the 'build it and they will come' idea. A new stadium is touted to boost Mean Green football - including attendance, recognition and recruits.

UNT senior Grant Waters says a new stadium would also provide another benefit.

I think if we get good recruits in here and can field a good team and get some national recognition for our football team, I think, eventually, as the years go on, it will make your degree look better as far as [from] an academic standpoint, said Waters.

Both sides of the issue have taken their positions on Facebook. The pro-stadium group has nearly 2,000 members. The opposition group has over 270 members.

UNT students were asked to help fund a new football stadium back in 2002. According to the "NT Daily," that failed by 55-percent.

Good job in getting that out there.

I have to say though, I don't really think of stadiums as being "Luxury." I think of "Luxury" boxes, but nothing else.

It's a luxury for us, we're not supposed to have anything nice. UT, A&M and others have seen to that.

My God, as I'm posting this a fantastic, positive advertisement for "UNT, discover the power of ideas" just ran after Dale Hanson's Channel 8 sports report, that showed our university as I have never seen before.

But back to my post, I was going to say that whenver I have had a chance to talk to students about the stadium issue, especially the ones who are working as waiters/waitresses, I ask them to think about how their employers will benefit due to the increased business, or the tips they may make whenever the weekends fall on game day when say an Oklahoma State or Texas Tech or Baylor etc etc etc...are in town? Several times when I have asked them in this way they stop and think for a second and realize what it would mean. It means a chance for better tip weekends, an opportunity to work more overtime and possibly an overall pay raise etc.

A better stadium for this university and the City of Denton benefits so many in so many ways that you could go on and on about it.

That's sort of similar to how I answered a question that Ellie Hogue asked me during the interview. She said students against the stadium bring up the point "why do we need a bigger stadium when we can't fill the one we have" and asked me what I thought about that. I said that yes, it usually isn't full but I believe the reason those extra bleachers were added were so that we could become a D1 program. But with the new stadium and having a higher capacity, we can bring in bigger conference teams such as Baylor or aTm which will fill up the stadium with not only our fans and the other schools fans but college football fans in the metroplex wanting to see big time college football. Plus I added the money it would bring to the city of Denton.
