----------------------FIU --- NORTH TEXAS

First downs ----- 13 ----- 22

Rushed-yards --- 39-110 ---- 33-119

Passing yards --- 237 ---- 309

Sacked-yards lost --- 1-5 ---- 3-32

Return yards ---- 112 ---- 9

Passes --------- 12-20-0 ---- 35-50-3

Punts ----------- 7-43.6 ----- 6-30.5

Fumbles-lost --- 1-0 ---- 1-1

Penalties-yards --- 9-78 ---- 7-70

Time of possession --- 25:18 ---- 34:42

Offensive plays ran------------- 59 ------------- 83

I wasn't at the game (or listened either) I live in West Texas.

If I did not know, I would guess NT won ---- [ more yards .more first downs, more time, similar penalties, less punts] --- Even the return yards indicate that NT may have kicked off (scored) more. This really hit me when I looked at the newspaper stats. The worst stat is 4 turn-overs vs 0.

However there is very little in stats that would indicate special team performance..... unless special teams are giving up way too many return yards. .

As I have always heard--- turnovers and penalties may be the most important stats.. Dickey's big problem was penalties --- often because of undisciplined play..

Someone in one of the threads diagnosed this condition as "Endzoneaphobia", which pretty well sums it up.

Here's how I saw this game. We put 450 yard of offense out there, and our Defense basically can be blamed for 3 of the 6 TD's scored. 1 of them was a punt block for a TD and two were off of turnovers where the starting field position was excellent for FIU.

...450 yard of offense and a defense that allows only 21 points should have given us the win this weekend.

Endzoneaphobia is compliments of my wife. We started walking away from the stadium and she said "you know what UNT's problem is?" "Endzoneaphobia."

Well, its friggin' brilliant and ABSOLUTELY is the right name for what we all sat there (god knows why) and watched Saturday Night...

I see 3 ints and 1 fumble lost...no matter what, I am going to guess that team lost.

There are lies, damn lies, and statistics. In football, stats can be deceiving...but one stat is not...turnovers. Most teams don't win when they have a -4 turnover ratio in a SINGLE GAME, especially when the other team has a whopping 0.

Turnovers kill.

We gave them great field position, and several of their scores followed only a few plays. Basically, fewer yards to travel, less offensive snaps.

We would take the kickoffs "only" far enough to have to march 70+ yards to score. following 50 - 60 yards of dink dunks and runs up the middle, we'd flop with a turnover or 3-and-out. More plays, more yards, less scoring.

there's your math.

Stats don't tell the whole story. Most of NT's offensive production comes late in the game when reserves are in and the game is out of reach.

I remember checking the stats on my CrackBerry as early as half time and noticed we were outdoing FIU statistically. I don't think the reserves went in until the 4th quarter. I think the real difference was field position starting drives. Of the 6 touchdowns scored by FIU, only 2 were on drives that even started in their own territory. Check out this link:

Unfortunately that turnover stat doesn't work in our favor when it's the other way around. Remember last year at Troy?

I like your thinking!

I remember in 2002 when the Texans put up 47 yards of TOTAL OFFENSE to the Steelers 422.

The Texans had just 3 first downs to the Steelers 24.

The Texans held the ball for 20 minutes- the Steelers had it for almost 40.

And yet the Texans won 24-6. Ah, those were the days.

Oh yeah, the Steelers had 5 turnovers.
