West Texas A&M students will vote on expanding their athletic fees from $10 to $20 and their student center fees from $3 to $6 this fall. The schools plans on building a new sports complex in the range of $41 million to $51 million and expanding their student center by 22,700 sq. ft. $5.7 million. The sports complex would consist of a new track and field stadium with a football practice field. Two new soccer fields w/grandstands. A new softball fourplex, and a new softball field w/ seating for 2000. New tennis courts. A new fieldhouse $20 - $25 million, this will be funded by private ind., A new baseball field, already funded by exs. A 1.6 jogging , walking track around the entire complex. The entire complex will be lighted and walled. There will also be a large open space for throwing frisbees, cooking out, etc.

If the encreased fees are approved they will be the highest or among the highest in DII.

Student Center=Union, right?

Another area where UNT students should see how lucky they are is in regard to the Union and Health Services. Compared to other schools, North Texas gets more for less money. Thank Chuck Fuller, Reggie Bond, and their crews for that. If everything at UNT ran as efficiently, dollar for dollar, as they run their areas, it would be about 1/3 bigger and cost about half as much.

wow this just shows how far behind we are if WT is moving to $20/hr.

Also curious why they are building new Tennis Courts since they dropped their programs a few years ago.

WT is reinstating track and field this coming year , plan on starting up the tennis program once again, meanwhile courts are for student use. They are also considering becoming the only university in the state with a wrestling program.

Yes, along with UT-ARlington, Texas State, and UT-SA, I believe (Adler, correct me if I'm wrong).

And we have a population that is bitching about us going to 10...

There are 3 state schools in the Big 12 Conference that charge a small athletics fee. An expensive optional football ticket package is available but even it doesn't guarantee tickets, those are allocated through a drawing. They have built their programs to where this is possible.

Many of the other state football playing schools are increasing their athletics fee to the $20 per credit hour range. Texas State, UTSA (which is starting a program) and now West Texas State. Students at these schools are admitted to all athletic events just by presenting their student ID.

Unfortunately, I am labeled an illiterate tin foil wearing conspiracy theorist (who's own mother doesn't even like him) when I contended that Lamar State University's athletics fee of $85 was possibly not the best example for a comparison.

Lamar State University plays at the lowest echelon of Division 1 at the Division 1-AAA level (1-AAA means they don't have football). Their Southland Conference consists of a group of schools that are within a couple of hours bus trip from each other. Only Central Arkansas is further for Lamar than the closest Sun Belt Conference rival for North Texas.

Yet, Lamar State University's $85 per semester is still considerably more than what students currently pay at North Texas ($3 per credit hour, and will continue to pay until a new stadium is completed).

Oh well.

How can a school that produced Stone Cold Steve Austin and Kevin Von Eric not be considered as having a wrestling program?

The wrestling team, coached at one time by Bob Maughan, did quite well until sometime in the 70's or early 80's. From what I heard, it was a victim of Title IX compliance issues.

We brought it back as a club a couple of times. I don't know if the club still exists. Even some of the state medalist types weren't too great. Of course, TX isn't much of a wrestling state overall compared to OK, MI, IA, PA, IN, NE, etc., so it makes sense that the level of competition would be significantly lower.

WT has produced about 20 professional wrestlers among those are Dory Funk Jr., Terry Funk, Tully Blanchard, Big Bad Bobby Duncum, Frank Goodish, and Dusty Rhodes . All of these played football also.
