OK...I contacted my friend that used to attend all the NT games, but especially, back in the 60s. He thinks the opposing team was Cincinnatti and that the coach was either Ed Jucker or Tay Baker. It seems NT got out to a big lead early and the opposing coach (NT coach was Dan Spika) called time out. During the time out, an NT fan ran out onto the floor with a live snake. My friend says he was at this game and had a pretty clear rememberance of that night.

I'll try to contact Dan Spika. More updattes later.

Word is that Johnny Jones has wanted to play in the snake pit for years and finally got it worked out for this season. I think part of the reason why we are playing there is to help draw a crowd to see Cameron.. We have opened up against Cameron the past two years and have averaged a little more then 2,000 fans.. I think it will be a fun game to attend.

If we can get 2,000 fans into the Snake Pit as loud as we normaly are Cameron will be scared poopless.

Im ready for this game, both Sam Houston Games, UTA back in the pit for Revenge, at Houston, at Arkansas, and OSU to make them regret scheduleing us.

Home Schedule is kinda weak but 4 very makeable good road games!

Maury John, very successful coach at Drake University, created the name the "Snake Pit" after getting blown out with a top 10 team in Denton.

Who's going to turn the snake loose? Might as well relive it all. I think this is a great idea, and it brings back a lot of memories. I saw my first college basketball game there. Also, wrestling matches with the Von Erichs were held there a few times as well.

Needed:

1. Someone to turn the snake loose at mid court prior to the game.

2. The "clickers" they used to hand out as you entered the Pit. Made the place unbearably loud and fun.

3. Mr. Cantu, the man that owned the barbershop, with his green tinted beard and moustache.

Man I hope I can make it back for that game. This should be an annual event. Make it 60's night and have every dress up. Go all out. Poor Cameron won't know what they've gotten themselves in to.

The Pit. What memories from the '60's and the Dan Spika era. Cameron or not, I wish I could be there to be part of a little nostalgia. The Pit use to hold around 4,000 fans; not sure what the capacity is now but it will still be loud.

I remember seeing live snakes on the playing floor, but it was part of a pre-game or halftime show. The snakes were closely watched by several people with snakehooks and they obviously knew what they were doing. I don't remember seeing any rowdies running out on the court with live snakes, but given the general atmosphere of that place, it might very well have happened.

I do remember fans throwing toy rubber snakes at the visiting team while they warming up and at the refs after calls went against NT. It was much more common to throw cups of ice at the refs and opposing players.
