It's not as if the Republican party hasn't done this before.

WOAH!!!

When have the Republican party done anything of the sort? I'd like to see the documentation where the RNC or a Republican running for national office threatend a free speech venue with legal action.

...and you'll note they have not debated the facts - they simply demand it stop being said. “Barack Obama is friends with Ayers, defending him as, quote, ‘Respectable’ and ‘Mainstream,’” the ad states. “Obama’s political career was launched in Ayers’ home. And the two served together on a left-wing board."

Those are documented facts. You can decide they don't matter to you, but they are FACTS. Plain in simple.

...and please tell me you're not holding McCain Responsible for a political ad someone else runs. You're not suggesting he's "guilty by association" are you? ...that's not fair is it? That would be like dumping on, oh, I dunno... OBAMA for his RELATIONSHIP WITH AYERS!!!!

Just because I have sent money to McCain's campagin doesn't mean it's his fault when I call Obama a moron. :)

Have a good evening. Enjoy Milhouse's speech.

Didn't the RNC in Dallas years ago involve such a thing? It's my day off and I'm working on a bottle of bourbon, so my memory's a little...you know...

I did a quick google search, and didn't find anything, but if you can back it up, c'mon. :)

You need to slow down, there. You also should consider relaxing before you induce labor.

1. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_v._Johnson

In short, G.L. Johnson decided it'd be a great idea to burn a US Flag at the 1984 RNC(I respect the freedom to burn one, but I wouldn't do it unless the government waged war on its own people). Also in short, my bad. It just so happened to be AT the RNC, but the lawsuit wasn't launched by the RNC itself.

2. The ad borrowed information from a journalist. Specifically, those lines. Good thing about the response from the Obama camp is that they did something faster than what happened with Kerry's campaign. Bad news is that they probably went too far with it.

3. No, I'm not gonna hold McCain responsible for the ad someone else places since McCain can, at most, tell someone not do something, but he can't order them not to do it. Besides, do you think I'd be silly enough to pull the guilty-by-association card? Nu-uh. Especially when it's a major fallacy to go by that sort of logic anyways, especially in politics where when it boils down, everyone knows everyone anyways.

4. Send money to whomever you like. At least you've got the decency to debate on points and not chain emails and crap. I gotta respect you for that.

Damn you, Jim Beam. :D I've had to brief the Johnson case like 3 times before...talk about a lapse...

That's great. Just another example of why I've always liked McCain: even though he's not always dead-on with my policy desires, he's definitely not afraid of standing up against members of his own party when he thinks they're being douchebags. This is actually shaping up to be a very tough election for me: badass John McCain (if he does stuff like this, i.e. "The Maverick" image), Barack Obama's moving speeches and (presumably) big heart (even though he'd probably tax me out the @$$), and...uhm...whoever else might run and actually do something interesting.

Besides, when the McCain campaign was confronted with the ad being run against Obama, they claimed that they had nothing to do with it, despite the fact that the ad was funded by a well-known backer of McCain's campaign.

closest thing our closet Democrat has done was the horrendous McCain/Fiengold which is a deliberate attempt to stifle political free speech, but it did not single out one group like Obama has done, it just said screw free political speech to everyone.
