Opponents scored too early and too often in past early-season matchups:

All time remaining in first quarter, scores:

2007 vs OU: 14:28 0-7, 11:44 0-14

2006 vs UT: 13:52 0-7, 1:04 0-14

2005 vs KSU: 8:12 0-3, 2nd qtr 11:35 0-10

2004 vs UT: 12:49 0-7, 9:43 0-10, 4:21 0-17

2003 vs OU: 10:11 0-3, 7:23 0-10

I think that one big factor in giving up early scores has been field position. I'm hopeful that a little deeper kickoff and the speed of the coverage team will reduce the kickoff return average by five yards. Conversely, I think that Jackson and Shorter will add about that amount to our starting field position.

Other factors...none of those are DeLoach coached defenses and we don't have to face OU or UT.

Bingo. It killed us last year against OU (well, that and being completely out-matched in every position) and it killed us against UT the last 2 times we played them. We've got to be able to kick field goals and get first downs. 3 and outs on the 20 yard line give your opponent the 50 yard line almost every time.

I have let to see the placekicker get the ball inside the 15 yardline so KSU starting field position should be around the 40 most times.

You are unfortunately quite right about that.

NT80 I hate to sound like a smarta@# but your thread label is the proverbial "elephant in the livingroom" don't ya think?. I mean,if you add special teams to that you've got it all!! Good thread though, it just struck me as humorous!

Uh, I thought we signed him for his strong leg?

True. I was thinking at first it was a defensive problem. We couldn't stop most team's first possession, but then also the offense turned the ball over on downs too fast, so they both were guilty. BTW, special teams were lame too!
