I would be very disapointed if Coach Jones did not get an extention....at least some sort of MULTI-year deal. He is one of the better coaches that NT has had since the Dan Spika era and to loose him would be unconscionable.

I really like Johnny Jones. He's done well hee and I hope he stays and continues to win. But I've always had a problem with the fact that the contract is binding on the school and not on the coach. If LSU came calling after next season, he's gone. If he stays and loses, we have to keep him and pay. Or fire him and pay (see Darrell Dickey). If he chooses to move on, he's free to go. It just doesn't seem like the school is protected by the contract.

Did I mention I like Johnny Jones ?

The protection can be put into the contract. Often there is a buy-out clause in a contract. The signing school has to pay for the remaining years.

I noticed Arkansas is playing at South Alabama this season. I have to believe there is some connection to Arkansas signing USA coach John Pelphrey. The home game may have been in the contract or negotiated in lieu of a cash payout.

North Texas was protected from former football coach Darrell Dickey recruiting players for another school that he had contact with while at North Texas. I think it is very important to put that into a contract. When Ronnie Arrow left Texas A&M CC he took most of the Islanders recruiting class to with him to South Alabama.
