Actress Ann Sheridan played basketball at North Texas (her real name was Clara Lou Sheridan) during the early 1930's before moving to Hollywood.

She starred in such films as Angels with Dirty Faces (1938), opposite James Cagney and Humphrey Bogart, Dodge City (1939) with Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland, Torrid Zone with Cagney and They Drive by Night with George Raft and Bogart (both 1940), The Man Who Came to Dinner (1942) with Bette Davis, and Kings Row (1942), where she received top billing playing opposite Ronald Reagan, Robert Cummings, and Betty Field. Known for having a fine singing voice, Ann also appeared in such musicals as Thank Your Lucky Stars (1943) and Shine On, Harvest Moon (1944). She was also memorable in two of her biggest hits, Nora Prentiss and The Unfaithful, both in 1947.

In 1939 Sheridan was labeled by Life Magazine as the Number 1 Glamour Girl in the World, and was one of the most popular pin-up girls for American GI's through World War II.

Nice find. Ann Sheridan was one of three actresses to come out of Denton in that era. Nancy Gates lived just north of the TWU ( then called College of Industrial Arts ) campus on north Locust Street. While my Mother was a student at CIA ( now TWU), she was Nancy Gates babysitter. Joan Blondell was also in Denton during the same time period.

North Texas had a women's basketball program in the 30's ?Please provide photos, stats, roster, anything.

I'm not doubting anyone, but I never heard of women's basketball here until Judy Buckles started coaching.

I can't provide photes, rosters or the like but North Texas had women's basketball in the 30s. The coach was Beulah Harriss, who is in the NT Athletics Hall of Fame. She coached both intercollegiate basketball and tennis. Our main gymnasium until the early 50s was Harriss Gymnasium, named in her honor. She also founded the Green Jackets, a women's spirit group. She was the pillar of women's sports at North Texas.

Now, I believe that women's basketball was in hiatus from World War II until the 60s or 70s (whenever Judy Buckles was hired). It was not played in the 40s and 50s when I was here.
