Anyone here been to Cozumel? We're going on a cruise for our honeymoon next month and considering whether to do one of the packaged excursions or strike out on our own adventure.

I was there three weeks ago, when Hurricane Dolly (then Tropical storm Dolly) went thorough.

I spend one to two weeks a year there, I am going back in September.

What do you like to do and how long will you be there. The scuba diving is great, so is the snorkeling great.

They have some great jeep or dune buggy tours.

I went to the Maya city of Tulum about two weeks ago. It was cool for the first hour but looking at buildings gets boring quick. They have a great beach there so if you go bring your suit and spend a few hours on the semi private beach.

Just renting scooters and driving around the perimeter of the island stopping at each bar you come across for a drink is pretty great way to spend a day. There is a Rasta bar at the tip of the island. You'll know it when you see it. Stop there. Grab a beer. Go upstairs and look around for some MG graffiti. It's there. (The place is covered in "Blank was here" sharpie marks.)

If you're doing the cruise out of Galveston, you will be a bit pressed for time at that stop. The Tulum beaches are awesome, though.

I would not book an excursion through the ship, but that's me. If you want a pretty good beach with food/drink right there, and are just wanting to maximize your time 'hanging out' and baking, Paradise Beach is not bad. Was there last Sept. and it was a good time. They maximize the amount of lounges on the beach, but when we were there it was not crowded. The pic in my profile was taken at the Cozumel pier.

Grab a taxi at the pier shops and zoom over there. Should be $40 or so to get you there and back. I believe it's around US $10 to get in with use of their snorkeling/beach stuff, but if you just want to hang out and eat/drink, admission is free as long as you're drinking/eating. Same trip booked on the ship will run you well over $200.

You can snorkle out past the pier out there, and see a few fish, and might even pick up a conch or two. Don't expect real Cozumel snorkeling, though.

Paradise Beach

EDIT: There are a couple silver shops at the pier shopping area that have free Tequila. Take advantage.

Another place to consider is Isla de Pasion, which is arguably the best beach in Cozumel, and definitely a great honeymoon beach.
