I read this article about how the pool may be a factor for all these world records falling, and not just Phelps'.

The pool is deeper, which makes the wake reverberation a bit less than usual. They also put in a gutter system to help reduce the waves.

Regardless, Phelps is making history.

Also, there has been some talk about the swimsuits the American men and women are wearing this year. SO????? This guy is amazing, and is a great champion and olympic sportsman. This is an athlete kids can be proud of looking to for inspiration. GREAT JOB...let's all hope he gets EIGHT golds. Just amazing dedication and effort.

U-S-A!!!! U-S-A!!!!!

I am no expert, but it looks like everyone has those special swimsuits. I think that would only affect the times that were put up, no advantage by country.

Pools have been continuously revamped to improve times...I'm sure there is something to the design of this one that is slightly aiding speed, but everyone swims in the same pool...and its certainly not five seconds faster.

The dude eats 12,000 calories a day:

Not being contentious, but where did you find this? Just looking at it I have to question the meals themselves...not the calorie intake, I believe its up around 10-12k...but I have to question things like white bread, french toast, pancakes and pizza...there are considerably healthier ways to get to these calorie levels.

Just curious

They listed these food items on the broadcast last night. I thought the same thing and wonder how much faster he would be if his nutritional intake was better. Then again, he's just pounding calories to keep up with the amount he is burning.

I asked the same question when I heard it, but then I thought "I have no idea what to eat and he has 11 more gold medals than I have, so he probably has much more of a clue as to what he should and should not eat, so whatever he eats is what he eats."

Im gonna go out on a limb and say his intake is exactly what is needed for what he does as he probably has access to the greatest nutritionists in the WORLD.

True, but that's a lot of cholesterol. The calories aren't the problem. Sounds like my wrestling diet. I was one of the few that wrestled up two weight classes instead of down two, so when the other guys split a salad on the road, I'd have 7 cheeseburgers and a milkshake.

By the way...am I the only one who thinks the U2 "Mission:Impossible" remake should be his official theme song? Every time I hear or see his name, in my head I hear:

BaDUMbaDUMdaDUMdaDUMDUMDUM

"Mr. Phelps...Mr. Phelps..."

BaDUMdaDUMDUMDUM

"...your mission, should you choose to accept it..."

(And yes, I know it was only Adam and Larry that did the song, but I didn't know how many people knew who they are.)

From an interview with IGN Sports prior to Athens:

IGN Sports: What about your diet? Are you always eating super healthy?

Michael Phelps: I eat pretty much whatever I want. I don't have a strict diet. It's all about cramming in as many calories into my system as I possibly can. To be honest with you, I have a tough time keeping weight on.

IGN Sports: What about fast food?

Michael Phelps: Bring it on!

IGN Sports: Do you take a multi vitamin?

Michael Phelps: I do.

IGN Sports: Gotta take the multi.

Michael Phelps: You must.

IGN Sports: Even if you're not an Olympic caliber athlete, the multi does you right.

Michael Phelps: It helps.

Can't get any closer than that. I figured he was beat.

Call me cynical, but I'm not sure he actually won..... had that close call been between two other spares, I think the gold would have gone the other way.
