Howard charged with speeding, reckless driving, 'speed competition'

ESPN.com news services

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Dallas Mavericks forward Josh Howard was arrested in his hometown after police said he was drag racing on a Winston-Salem street.

He is charged with speeding (94 mph in a 55 mph zone), careless and reckless driving, and speed competition. He has been released from the Forsyth County jail on a written promise to appear in court Sept. 23.

Police said an officer saw a black Lexus and a silver Volkswagen speeding along U.S. 421 late Thursday night. The officer stopped the Lexus, and Howard was identified as the driver. Authorities didn't identify the other driver.

Howard played in high school in nearby Kernersville and was a standout at Wake Forest.

According to the Winston-Salem Journal, Howard is in town this week for a basketball camp sponsored by his foundation.

The Dallas Mavericks drafted Howard in the first round of the 2003 NBA draft, and was named to the All-Star team in 2007.

On Jan. 12, 2000, Bobby Phills of the Charlotte Hornets was killed in a similar incident.

Phills was traveling behind teammate David Wesley at more than 75 mph when his Porsche spun and crossed into oncoming traffic. It hit another car, which in turn was struck in the rear by a minivan. Phills was pronounced dead at the scene. The drivers of the other two vehicles recovered.

Anyone want to re-visit that trade of Howard for Ron Artest?

I'll take a guy who smoks weed and got caught speeding over someone who beats on spectators anyday. I just want to know....why the hell was he racing a VW?

I don't know but 20/20 tells me he now wishes he had been driving the VW instead?

Everybody loves Herbie.

Yeah there's almost nothing cooler than killing another motorist while driving recklessly.

We don't know the circumstance surrounding the race...it's not optimal, thats for sure. I used to drag race from time to time when I was younger on very very remote streets in the countryside. Maybe Josh was doing the same? Wishful thinking perhaps.
