Drex is allowing me to look at some old media guides...including the one from 1968 (Joe Greene's senior season).

This is a pretty decent schedule: (games are in order of when they happened)

NMSU---home

@Colorado State

Memphis State---home

Northern Michigan--home

@ Tulsa----game on TV according to the media guide

@Arkansas

Cincinnati---homecoming

@ UTEP

@ Louisville

@ Wichita State

Teams only played 10 regular season games back then. Oh, and of that schedule the conference games were: Memphis State; Tulsa; Cincinnati; Louisville and Wichita State.

Pretty interesting reading. Thanks, drex.

Thanks for posting that. That was a pretty good schedule. What was our record that year?

Joe Green/Steve Ramsey era... 8-2

We lost to Memphis 18-30 and to Arkansas by 2. Arkansas's record that year was 10-1 with only a loss to Texas which was in their 30 game win streak. Even our loss to Arkansas was impressive.

We we 7-1-1 the previous year ...lost to Memphis and 7-3 the next year after this... lost to Memphis, San Diego State, and Drake.

What has North Texas done in the past 30 years to build on that success?

Surely there has been a long term plan, and not just a bunch of band-aids to cover immediate needs.

That year...we played 3 of the teams that we would eventally meet (33+ years later) in New Orleans Bowls. (Colo. St; Cincy; Memphis State).

NMU was Div. II then also?

I don't know about Northern Michigan. I do know that we were Division I back then (the highest level---now FBS). Our only years, not in the highest level...were 1982-1994.

Still preachin' to the choir.

Funny you should mention something like this. I was at a dinner party the other night, and was talking to a gentleman who came to school at North Texas in 1968. We were talking about today's problems vs. 1968. He told me he could not wait until he could go to a college football game when he got here. He went on to say that there were not many people in attendance, and support was low. He was very disappointed. FYI, he lives in Denton and ran a very very successful business. Never did try again because he said it is same old story, just a different decade.

You may find this interesting, but during my final days of high school in 1964, when I decided to attend North Texas State University, my cousin and I traveled to Denton that summer to see the campus. The first place we visited was the football stadium - Fouts Field.

Having gone to school in that era, I have to disagree to some extent. Student support was better than it is now despite NT having less than half the number of current students. Football games and the parties after were the big social event at the time and average student attendance was about 50% of the students. Can you image were the program would be now with that type of student participation? Non-student support was less than it is now as the Southwest dominated Texas athletics.

As far as the schedule than it was not considered to be very good at the time. MVC football was generally rated about were the Belt is now. All those schools with the exception of Arkansas were definitely lower tier with NT and Memphis being the most prominent.

An aside, I didn't go to the Arkansas game but from reports I heard; it make the 1988 UT game look superbly officiated in comparison. There was noway that NT would be allowed to beat the pride of the lily white SW southwest conference.

I think the late 1960's and the Fry/Blakeney years were pivotable times in NT sports history. In both of these eras, NT had both great, by NT standards, men's basketball and football success. In both cases instead of taking advantage of the momentum and moving athletics forward, NT administration folded and severely cut funding.

Green Dozer wrote of the man who said "it is the same old story, just a different decade." What hurts the most about reading that is how true it is. We have had season tickets since 1972 and have seen more bad years than good ones. I would like to think that we can get out stuff together, but I am just no longer sure that it will happen - at least not in my lifetime.

I thought in 1968 there was Div I Large School and Div I Small School... with us being in the latter. Is that not true? Maybe it was a little before 1968?

Grand Green you were right in that we could not win (I was there and we were robbed) BUT it had nothing to do with color it was SWC vs non SWC Texas school.

I was speculating, as you are, as no one can know the motivation behind that officiating.
