“Last year, we got chased by dogs two times and they did not give up,” Patterson joked. “They chased us right onto the bus.”

The worst part? “I didn’t even get the sale,” Patterson said. “The lady said, ‘No, not interested.’ I turned around and hear those dogs coming at me.”

How many times would this happen to our players in Denton?

Denton is a "fair" sports town...it's just dominated by two Universities whose faculty and staff are not big when it comes to attending and, it seems to me, that the student body should be represented at the games in much higher proportions than it is! Door to door sales won't get you a "full house"...why not spend time networking with student groups and local civic organizations? When was the last time our coaches and players ever really worked those two areas hard?????

Yes, I know several faculty and staff members at UNT who have supported the programs at UNT for years and years with both their money and their talent, so I am not (at all) "talking" about those GREAT fans (and you definitely know who you are), but, as a percentage, faculty, staff and student body support is low...and has been for years. I wonder how UNT "stacks" up in that catagory against some of the other schools who ARE considered "big time"...liike say Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M, Arkansas, etc., etc. Remember, I am talking on a percentage basis here...does anyone have any real facts and not just "I believes"? I admit my comments are of the "I believe" catagory...just observations from my many years in Denton and through my personal attendance observations.

Just wondering. I know the percentage of UNT grads working on campus who are members of the UNT Exes/Alumni Assoc. is pretty darn low, so I figure it would carry over to the Mean Green Club, ticket sales, etc. Just wondering...anyone have any facts...and i wonder if the University has any plans to change that percentage level? I know faculty/staff get reduced prices for season tickets...seems like a nice incentive to me..

We don't and should not have to crawl for support. Again, you mine as well go to Saudia Arabia and sell sand. Denton is not a sports town, and won't be. Sorry!

With an attitude like this, you are right, it won't be. But just because it hasn't been in the past, shouldn't determine what it will be in the future - if that was the case, we should just drop our Athletics program.

The first year Baylor came to town, with much much more publicity all over town, we had 30k people at the game. The years Ryan won their state titles in football and basketball, you saw droves of Denton people turn out for the games.

Hey I personally think it is a great idea. Anything to build the fan base. Just imagine... little Tommy, about 6 years old answers the door and there are two Mean Green players smiling down at him... Unless little Tommy is into musicals, he'd probablyl be so psyched that Mom and Dad would have to buy tickes for the whole family so Tommy could see these guys do there thing on Saturday.

Get 'em early! Tommy joins the Jr. Mean Green Club and is a fan for life!

Hey maybe I have on green colored glasses on but it could work. One things for certain --- this couldn't HURT our sales!

Haha - I hope Tommy's not a stupid queer that hates football. He'd probably vote down a fee increase and stay up all night listening to Scissor Sisters albums.

Though I have seen it dozens of times now, I still giggle at your RV Joker icon. School girl giggles at that.

Ditzy Blonds in unison ---- "Love that Joker!" :P

Don't thank me for Mario Paint - thank Cerebrus.

I also hope the RV Joker is not seen as a giant statement on the program either. I just like me some Batman.

First, don't question my attitude, I support this program with my time and money (season ticket holder for fball and bball, Mean Green Club). The sellout with Baylor was a lot of Baylor fans from DFW, and also a Chamber night, which you should not need with a Big XII team coming to town. Also, this town has never turned out in droves for the high schools as compared to Plano (when it a was a one high school town) or even Celina, Stephenville, or Pilot Point (you should know about Pilot Point since you live in Crossroads). That is the kind of enthusiasm I want to see. Simply, Denton is not a sports town. I grew up here, and have lived here most of my adult life. I played football at Denton High School, then the only high school in Denton. For a one high school town in supposedly football crazed Texas, support was poor. The only people that attended the games were parents/relatives of the football team, Filles, and the band. The best athletes were never on the teams. After half time, half the fans had left. I have seen many bars try a sports theme, and most have not had great success. The bars don't even get much of crowd interested in another college game, nor do you have any trouble getting in during a Cowboy game. Vitty's on Teasley has Nebraska watching parties, but that is only because the owner is from Nebraska and is a huge fan. Many businesses have tried to tie to North Texas, only to see the benefit does not outweigh the cost (i.e. renting a tent at the games, opening a concession, putting up North Texas stuff in their business etc.) Even when Ryan High School won its state titles in football, it was not treated as a big deal like in other Texas communities. I know it would be against the rules, but I bet not one Ryan player was told his lunch/dinner was on the house in any Denton restaraunt. It happens in many other towns across Texas. Denton, as a community, wants to be seen as an eccletic, weird community that supports the arts. Even its pee wee football is not on same level as other cities in the metroplex.
