2008 NORTH TEXAS ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME BIOS

Chris Davis (Men’s Basketball) -- One of the most dynamic players in North Texas basketball history, Davis finished his career as the second all-time leading scorer in school history with 2,254 points. He was a three-time all-conference selection and the 1999-00 Big West Freshman of the Year after scoring 21.7 points a game. He was the nation’s 14th leading scorer that year and the second leading freshman scorer in the country. As a junior he turned in his best season at North Texas as he became the first player in school history to lead the team in scoring, rebounding, and assists in the same season. That year Davis was a unanimous pick to the first-team all-conference selection and he was named to the second team District 9 squad by the National Association of Basketball Coaches. He scored 22.5 points a game that year and finished the season ranked No. 9 in the NCAA in scoring. He topped 30 points or more four times in his career including a career-high 37 points. Davis scored 20 points or more 58 times during his career at North Texas. Davis ranks in the top 10 at North Texas in seven different categories.

Brad Kassell (Football) -- Kassell anchored a North Texas defense that is widely credited with starting the Mean Green’s run of four straight Sun Belt Conference titles and New Orleans Bowl bids. He is the third all-time leading tackler in North Texas history with 365. He was a three-time all-conference selection and the 2001 Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Year, becoming only the third player in school history to earn a Defensive Player of the Year award at that time. In 2001 he had 12 tackles for a loss to lead North Texas. He led North Texas in tackles in 1999 (112) and 2000 (115) and eclipsed the century mark in tackles in each of those seasons. Kassell had four interceptions in 2000 to tie for the team lead on his way to a unanimous first team All-Big West Conference pick. As a sophomore Kassell led the Big West Conference in tackles for a loss with 17 and was a second team All-Big West Conference pick. Since leaving North Texas in 2001 Kassell has gone onto enjoy a widely successful career in the NFL.

Ken Kelley (Track and Field) -- Kelley was a four-year letterwinner from 1952-55. In 1954 & 1955 he was the high-point meet performer at the Border Olympics, West Texas Relays, ACC Meet, TCU Meet, South Western Relays and the AAU Meet. At the 1955 West Texas Relays he tied the meet record in the high hurdles and set a new meet record in the broad jump. At the 1955 Texas Relays he won first place in the high jump, establishing a new school record at 6’6". Kelly set a new school record in the high hurdles in 1955. He was nationally recognized by the NAIA as a leader in several categories, including the high hurdles with a time of 14.3 seconds, the high jump with a height of 6’6" and in the broad jump at 23’8". He graduated in 1955 and followed his collegiate career by competing in track & field for the U.S. Army. Following his honorable discharge from the Army, Kelley taught at Thomas Jefferson high school in San Antonio before later becoming the track coach at Texas City High School. As a track coach at both schools, Kelley developed several district regional and state qualifiers. He was nominated by the U.S. Olympic committee as one of the coaches for the 1972 Olympic Teams.

Marilyn Marin (Women’s Soccer) -- Marin ended her fabulous career with every offensive record in school history while leaving her mark on the NCAA. Marin had 214 career points, tied for 10th in NCAA history, 88 goals, eighth in NCAA history, 2.70 points per game, tied for seventh in NCAA history, and 1.11 goals per game, tied for eight in NCAA history. In 2002 Marin turned in the best season in North Texas soccer history. She led the nation in points (67), goals (26), and points per game (3.53). She was the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year in 2002 and 2003 along with being named the Freshman of the Year in 2000. Marin was a four-time first-team all-conference selection and a four-time all-central region selection. Marin is the first player in league history to be named to the first-team all-conference four straight years and capture back-to-back Player of the Year honors. In 2000 she was named to the Freshman All-America first-team after pouring in 24 goals, six assists, and 54 points on the season. In 2003 she had her third 20-goal season with 23 goals, 14 assists, and 60 points. She had 11 hat tricks for her career along with 23 games where she scored two goals or more.

Chris was a very nice player...Brad was a stud...but Marilyn was absolutely dominant, (my parents were barely alive for Ken Kelley). Marilyn was hands down the best player in the history of UNT soccer and an amazing person to boot. Congrats

All very deserving, but I will do my annual rant; and complain that the late Walter Chapman continues to be ignored. One of the best football players in NT history and IMO the very best on any of the Fry teams.
