if there is a big donor in place - perhaps they should tie the donors gifts to be contingent on the students passing the fees...just a thought

That sounds like the proper thing to do but I have a feeling that the big donor is going to be a corporation, not an individual. If that is the case, their donation would be null and void if the project fails.

I am becoming more and more optimistic for the reasons previously stated. The students can actually see what they are voting for and how the results affects other parts of the campus. Also, some of the students will graduate before the fee becomes effective so they can feel as if they contributed to the betterment of North Texas without it costing them a dime (unless they want it to). I do believe that you'll see several, perhaps many, making contributions after they graduate, thus showing how this is creating a new spirit at North Texas.

Well, I don't think it's secret, but if the student vote fails then the Student Senate can pass it. There may be fallout like last time, but I know that there is a strong majority in the Senate that supports the stadium.

But... I don't think it will come to that. The last vote in 2001 was based on nothing but empty promises and mixed messages. I think part of the reason Rick is so secretive now is because of the disaster of the last referendum, and I can't blame him. This time, there will be drawings of the actual stadium design and a plan for improved facilities where Fouts is now located. Students will actually be able to see that beautiful new stadium with a promise that they will sit in it in just two years.

To me, this sounds like a disaster waiting to happen....perhaps b/c the sting of the last vote and fallout thereafter is still fresh in my mind.

What I would like to know is where the voting booths will be placed? Right outside Fouts field or The Pit, come to mind---with the obvious inclusion of the "regular" locations. Is there anything in the SA constitution/by-laws that would prevent that from happening? It has always been difficult to get good numbers for any SA votes...has the thought of "early" voting come up? I just think that if we could get all of the 5-6000 students that show up to every football game to vote, this would be a shoe in....as it is, these elections are usually not promoted enough that the voting dates and locations are etched into student's brains. We can't afford for this vote to fail....esp. since it appears (conspiracy theory?) that the administration is setting this up as an easy out for themselves.

Voting should take place on the following date:

Saturday, September 6, 2008 at the student entrance to Fouts. Every ID scanned equals a yes vote.

Prior to the game, voting stations should be set up in the Mean Green Village and by FFR's tailgate.

I can back his statements up. A couple of things need to fall into place, but that timeline is correct. Rick has been pretty close to the vest on info (publicly) and this public attention to the stadium issue is a reveral in tactics.

My thoughts are that there has been a development or two that is making this timeline work out.

So I am going to put up my GMG JQ street cred here and pull this timetable out for you all:

Soon: Announcement of plans, perhaps big donor or naming rights

Fall 2008: Student approval of incremental student fee for athletics

Fall 2008/Winter 2009: More open fundraising to public

Late winter/early spring 2009: Dirt moves

Fall 2010: Stadium opens (though maybe not for first home game if not 100% ready)

Call bullshit on me in 2010 if you are still in Fouts in Oct/Nov. Otherwise, RESPECT MY AUTHORITY! ;)

man crush!
