Depends on the program.

To me part of what makes college games special is that a fan transported forward in time 30 years ought to be able to see his team on the field and figure out pretty quick who it is that is playing. Fashions change as does the state of protective gear but it shouldn't be a mystery about a team and a father taking his kid to the game ought have memories triggered by seeing the team of when his Dad took him to his first game.

I guess if a program is bad enough you want to rid yourself of the past but college athletics in part are about memories of when you were a student, that's supposedly one of the justifications for athletics, to draw us old farts back to campus. We all set aside one weekend a year for the purpose of us old farts having a chance to reunite with old classmates.

Depends on the uniform...

An old story is that when Bo Schembechler was hired at Michigan he stood up at his first booster meeting and said "first thing I'm going to do is change those helmets".... Needless to say his comment was met by silence. Bo knew not to mess with tradition then.

When Lou Holtz went to Notre Dame he wanted to put an intlocked ND on the gold helmet. Then he was informed the golden helmet was a representation of the golden dome on campus and it wouldn't be allowed.

This is a smart move for SMU - the traditional uniform from their glory years is cool. White helmet - red stang. They are going to be formidable under Jones. Since we aren't playing them for awhile I will be pulling for them especially against TCU...

Does this mean "Pony up" is dead?

Hayden Fry changed NTSU's helmets and unis when he came to Denton and did the same when he went to Iowa. Seemed to work pretty good in both cases.

The red and white jerseys I liked; blue not-so-much. I also got a chuckle out of the AD comments on returning to national prominence. When I hear that, I can't help but think of how they got there.

returning to the rich tradition of paying players

I hardly think SMU changed because we did....

but I like the new jerseys a lot more

I don't know who, but could there be a local H.S. team that they are following. In their world, we were following SLC with our uniform change.

In the real world we followed SLC with our uniform change ...

I like our new uniforms, new logos, everything - well, I'd rather see a green helmet, but I can live with white -

...but in the case of SMU, I like to see the return to the pony express uniform. I think it's a great change and will get some of their old fans a little fired up.

...Good Move.

I wish NT would've stuck with the old look, black pants included, just gone with a slightly lighter shade of green. I absolutely HATE the white helmets. Still can't forgive the SLC look (yeah, I said it. No matter how much you break down the differences, it's too g-damned close).

Careful, there are some round here that'll hang ya for sayin' somethin' like that. :pirate:
