You may have heard of the term "jumping the shark". It refers to, when a one time good TV show, has totally run out of good episodes, and is now "reaching" for plot ideas. The term goes back to an episode of "Happy Days"....when they had Fonzi on a motorcycle...do a daredevil stunt, by jumping over a tank, which contained a shark.

Well....now there's a new term, for when a movie series (one with sequels).....reaches so far, to the point of being putrid. The term "nuking the fridge"....applies to the latest installment of Indiana Jones. I didn't see it....but supposedly....he survives a nuclear blast, that sends him across the New

Mexico desert.....in a refrigerator. He lands...unscathed.

Since you haven't seen it...I won't play spoiler...except to say the fridge scene seems documentary-like realistic compared with the last 20 minutes

Had to go home and watch Raiders to remind me why I liked Indiana Jones

You mean there aren't ants that large?

All the Indiana Jones films have moments that stretch credibility. While Crystal Skull has more than the others, watching Temple of Doom about a month ago shows it's not by much.

That said, I still enjoyed it.

Courtland, is there a movie that you DID not like?

As for the fridge, I kept wondering that now that he survived the blast, how in hell was he going to get out of it since most of those 50's styled fridges were opened by pulling a handle from the outside. I'm not that old but I still remember when I was very young some of the older folks warning us kiddos about "Climbing or playing around old fridges" because they couldn't be opened from the inside, and they were right. No way to open them up from the inside as they had locking handles on the outside only.

As for the Crystal Skull, a major "Suspend Your Disbelief" and an even bigger dissapointment. Save your money and watch it on the rerun channels later on.

I loved the first 3 Indiana Jones movies...so I obviously have no problem with suspending the concept of reality...but the end of this last movie was not just over the top, but down right cartoonish. I'll play ad-libs since some haven't seen it - A (explitive) (noun) flies out of Macchu Picchu! A (explitive) (noun)!! With glowing (nouns) and everything, (action verb) round and round!!! And the (Sigorny Weaver movie) have just been sitting in suspended animation for (time period) waiting for the last (noun) to be returned? Very disappointing.

On the plus side the chase scene was filmed in downtown New Haven at Yale.

It was obviously a moment intended as a homage to Punky Brewster and her special friend Cherry

I may be wrong, but didn't Fonzi jump the shark on water skis? I don't seem to remember the motorcycle bit.

You may be right, buddy. I guess since he had a motorcycle...I assumed it was on a motorcyle. Not sure that I ever saw the episode. I did watch the show in its' earlier days.....well before it "jumped the shark."

Too many to name Rick.

BTW - I'm not saying Crystal Skull was some great film. Hell, it's not the best blockbuster of the summer by any stretch of the imagination.

It had some ridiculous leaps of faith, but really was it that much more beyond the realm of possibility than;

** Dropping from an airplane in an inner tube, proceeding the slide down a MOUNTAIN, then falling from said mountain about a quarter of a mile down into a raging river.

** The mine chase, especially the JUMP FROM ONE TRACK TO ANOTHER with a perfect landing

** Outrunning a flood

*****I'm sure there are others, but those were the the first that immediately leap to mind. The other two don't have quite the same check your brain at the door moments(though some head scratchers do exist).

All of which were in Temple of Doom. Now I suppose TOD gets a bit of a free pass because it references Gunga Din so heavily.

As far as the [Weaver movie] bit - the film was taking place in the 1950's, when all sorts of films about that topic were coming out(everything from the classic War of the Worlds to schlock made by Ed Wood) - I had no isses. The original three took place in the 30's, when there were still "blank spots" on the map, and we had not discovered everything. It made sense for religious artifacts to be the jumping off point, because alot of those serials did go in that direction. The Old Republic serials of the 30's and 40's that influenced Lucas and Spielberg show these qualities. Hell even classic films like King Kong showed some of this...with the mysterious, undiscovered Monster Island or whatever it was called.

By the time of the 50's, the world had shrunk with the war and technology, so the filmmakers of those days looked elsewhere for their adventures. Only makes sense that so should Indy.

The term "jumping the shark" refers to the moment when wheels fly off a quality program.

I burned vacation time to see Crystal Skull on opening day. I love the Indiana Jones films so I'll be kind.....The first half hour was excellent, even past the point of the fridge nuking.....then it happened, the Shia Lebeauf character.

It's Jar-Jar, Chacci, ScrappyDoo, and Cousin Oliver all wrapped in one little annoying 'wish this character would quickly die' package. He didn't, and the final saga of this epic series quickly fell apart.

in related news.....

In an attempt to raise ratings, Cousin Oliver to join White House during final season of Bush Presidency

To add on...in the new movie don't we see a picture of Indy's dad (Sean Connery) and Indy discussing him as if he had passed?

But he drank from the Holy Grail and ought to have eternal life...

You only had eternal life if you stayed in the city where the Grail was resting. Which is why the Knight had never left.

He had to leave or else he would be taunted a second time.
