Today's DMN notes that SMU and Baylor have agreed to a 6-game football series starting in 2011. Three will be played in Waco; three in Dallas.

How come I get the feeling that this will preclude any chance of us getting a long-term series with SMU, as had been rumored? I really don't see the Ponies playing TCU, Baylor and us.....every year for several years in a row.

I think Phil Bennett was our best friend down there....he wanted to play us. I think now that he's gone.....the snobs are back to being snobs.

Just a guess though.

I agree...this looks bad for any home and home extended series with EITHER Baylor or SMU. I hope the athletic dept. is ACTIVELY working on this sore of arrangement with a couple of schools like TCU, Rice, Tulane, Tulsa, etc., etc. where UNT could build a "local" rivelry and get some "rears in the seats".

SMU is doing whats best for them...its all about self interest and they have the leverage to do so. If NT has a chance to benefit NT then they wont give a crap about anybody else, they will take it. SMU did the right thing...why would they want to play NT when they can play Baylor.

Not to mention that SMU will beat Baylor a few of those times with Jones at the helm. I could easily see SMU taken 3 minimum, maybe 4. Four W's over a big 12 team is the kind of statement that will make SMU a force in the future. I watched Jone build a beast on the islands. The aerial war is coming and we have to find a way to play that team either on the schedule once every 5 years or in a bowl game.

It's gonna be fun!

I don't think an smu deal will ever happen, they are in sort of a similar situation as us, in the way we want to raise our game, so do they. They just have more clout and "tradition" attatched. Most schools still don't see us as a viable D1-A team yet. Until we start to win and have new facilities, I don't see a deal done with any "regional big boy." We do need a rivalry, I don't know if we have ever had one outside of NMSU.

For Smut it was a case of a series at Fouts/SBC vs. Floyd Casey/Big12. Until UNT gets serious about a stadium and upgrades to the program we'll lose out on these decisions. <_<

A series with Baylor is a no-brainer for the Ponies. Nearby former SWC mates, private schools, Big XII opponent. Even with us having a new stadium Baylor would still get the nod.

Look for Baylor opt out of SMU stinks it up going into that season. Maybe a year or two after if they 'stangs lose badly.

If SMU is rockin' with Jones at the helm and they wallop the Bears, I would expect them to skyrocket into great things.

Not that I think that will happen. I am a believer that with Dodge and DeLoach at the helm, we have a pretty good up on SMU. Hope they prove me right...

It's true, you blow out Baylor and win some conference titles and you pretty much never look back.
