DALLAS — Monetary guarantees for non-conference home football games are rising at "a fairly alarming rate," according to a top athletics director, and in some cases surpassing or approaching $1 million.

Ohio State, for example, will pay $1.4 million for Navy to come to Columbus in the 2009 season. Wisconsin will pay "just under $1 million" for each of two home games against Northern Illinois, according to athletics director Barry Alvarez. Texas is paying $900,000 to Florida Atlantic this fall. Arkansas is paying Tulsa $850,000, and Georgia and Tennessee are paying more than $800,000 for a single home foe.

This is the result of the Big Six deciding to keep the midmajors out of the big bowls. The midmajors know that with the current BCS system, a lot of teams won't risk playing another Big Six team. So they go slumming down to the mid-majors for the easy wins, but they are starting to pay through the nose for the privilege. There's one way to fix this...

A 16-team playoff with all 12 conference champs getting an automatic berth and 4 at-large. All of the money generated would be allocated using a similar formula for the NCAA basketball tournament.

A playoff, brilliant! We need to put more thought into this before we announce it to the world.

They'll worship us. I will worship you.

If there is a 16 team playoff or something to that effect...it will still be mostly a BCS based format. They will only take 1 or maybe 2 schools from the current BCS conferences.

and that one way isn't changing for awhile. I think the BCS contract lasts until like 2014?

Only if it is run by the BCS. The NCAA needs to run this... you know, like they do in EVERY OTHER SPORT.

Oh I completely agree with you but I am just not sure if its going to work. In the end its going to come down to money and national interest and for them to take a team from all the conferences and with only 4 at large births is going to be super risky. I just dont think the ratings will be there as much unless its the championship game or the round before that. I just think unless the whole landscape of college football changes I think any system will still be a pretty BCS type influenced system.

Could the ratings for early round games be any worse than the GMAC or International Bowls? Would Florida or Ohio State or Texas fans not watch because their team is only in the first round?

And yeah, the BCS guys might not like that there are "only" 4 at-large bids, but any playoff system must recognize the conference champs.

The problem that the "Big 6" are going to have with this is that they will have to give a fair seat to the schools that they have worked so hard to keep down. More money splits is not going to make them happy.

I agree that any system that doesn't recognize every conference champion would be flawed, but I don't see the schools with the money allowing that to happen as things stand now. The best way for this to work out in our favor is for more schools to move up and for the "midmajors" to outnumber the "Big 6" conference members. Then we can tell them how its going to be for a change. (unless they invite us to join the party, then forget those little schools.)

I am pretty certain that if the NCAA announced a tournament starting in 2015 to crown an NCAA Div-I Football Champion, the Big 6 will kick and scream but they will have no choice to participate.

As for the money, they can work out something like the winner gets 50% of the gate, the loser gets 30%, 10% goes to the next round game, and 10% goes to expenses. Regardless of the details, the Big Six will play in it but the NCAA is going to have to show leadership to make it happen.

Well I think the NCAA will have to consider overall interest and money...they would be dumb not too. Whoever is playing, they will and will always have a vested interest but the goal and idea will be how to get more interest. If they get a playoff format its because they want to increase the ratings, money and profit. Lower conference/non BCS teams are the ones nobody cares about. Really the whole point of the playoff debate is not for the small schools, its for all the top ranked schools and maybe a sleeper or two from the non BCS conferences. Its just a reality.

For that tournament to happen it has to be approved by the Board of Directors. The membership of that board is one conference president from each conference. There are six automatic qualifier conferences and five that are not. For a tournament to happen, at a minimum at least one of them have to agree to a playoff.
