Good idea...I'll bet we could set up an "account" through student development/athletics/somewhere to do just that, and stay away from all the "work" involved while getting "credit" for our donations and letting UNT get credit for the donations...Gee, why did't I think about that in the first place? There are folks in Development that do this sort of thing for a living...and do it well...Let's follow-up on this.

97 and 03...you are "on campus" right? Could you contact development or the athletic dept and just "feel this idea out" (no comments folks! ) for those of us who would be interested in getting something like this going in the name of the members of GMG.Com?

I would be interested to know how much the designated stadium account has in it. You would think that this is public information.

I would like to know the answer to this as well. Without knowing how much money we need to fund the stadium, we have no goal. Without knowing how much money has been contributed, we have no idea how much more we need. Without knowing how much more we need, most are discouraged from contributing at all.

With comments like this from the athletic department, the frustration reaches boiling point:

The athletics department recommends that you instead send your donation as 'unrestricted funds' so that it can be put to immediate use (such as scholarshps).

Uhhhh...no. That's exactly what I do NOT want to do.

Besides, even if we do designate our funds specific to the stadium, how will anyone ever know that's where the money ends up going? There is no accountability and no way for us to track the funds. It's like donating to the Katrina relief fund.

97and03, thanks for the follow up.

I see my donation to the "stadium fund" as separate from my Mean Green Club donation. I expect the Athletic Dept to use my MG Club money for scholarships and uniforms and stamps etc. I want my "stadium fund" money to be used for just that-the Stadium. And maybe, if the right person in the Department sees this hopefully growing chunck of money, perhaps said person would do something to get this project moving.

While I like the idea of putting the funds in an interest bearing account, I would like to get some kind of charitable gift perk from giving money to the University. Let the University put the money in an interest bearing account.

By the way, this project needs some interest.

Please understand that it is a HUGE no-no to take money that someone donates and use it for something else. Losing the public's trust on using money for its intended use can be detrimental to the success of a donation drive and the financial health of a non-profit organization.

The Red Cross took a huge PR hit for not using funds in ways contributers thought the money was going to be being used for. If you think about it this way, there are plenty of non-profits out there that would gladly take your money to help them with their cause(s).

UNT has every right to try to talk you in to donating to what it thinks are more pressing needs, but if you want to donate to something specific, you may do so. The only real recourse UNT would have it to refuse your donation. It rarely happens but donations are mostly refused regarding controversial situations.

Many thanks to 97and03 for the follow-up info. I did not know that a "stadium fund" already existed. I think it best to let the University handle such donations as they are set up to do such things much better than an "outside" group. And, like GreenJoe I would think most folks would want an acknowledgement from the University and the benfit of Mean Green Club "perks", donation level "perks" for seat locations, etc., etc.

Nice to know it is available....Thanks again. Great info.
