Comments from CUSA board post.

This could be the beginning of the end for the 16 team Big East Conf as we know it today.

I'm sure the Football Big East Member Presidents and AD's might be drooling over the thought of starting a real full-membership conference.

Tranghese was the biggest "thorn" in the side of the Big East Football Members...as his #1 goal was to always protect the Catholic non-football Big East members first.

It will not be an easy job since the Big East is essentially two different leagues in basketball with different schools and different agendas, which, at times, have clashed.

Tranghese said that he didn't think there would be an immediate move to break the league into two conferences, with the football schools breaking off from the predominantly Catholic basketball schools.

Great! Break up the Big East! This can only help UNT's chances down the line of moving up to CUSA or new SWC. Where is that new stadium when we need it?? <_<

I hadn't realized it but ALL of those eight basketball schools are Catholic universities. Given Tranghese's background it's no wonder why he protected them. Unless his successor also comes from a similar background, then I think that we can expect them split into two conferences as soon as the football-playing teams qualify for basketball proceeds.

The issue is not as much Catholic basketball schools as it is institutional quality and (somewhat) private vs. public. When BC, VT and Miami left for the ACC, it was as much about academics and standards not being enforced across the board as it was athletics. Schools like UConn, Rutgers, West Virginia and Cincinnati do not share the same mission or standards as the private schools around them and that has led to a lot of tension throughout the years.
