Exerpt from DU student newspaper

The talk of changing conferences has been going on now for a few seasons but finally became a true reality when the SBC came out with a Wyatt Committee report.

The first point of the membership standards where that all member institutions had to sponsor a minimum of 15 sports that the conference offers a championship and that Denver and New Orleans were given a five-year grace period to reach the standard. Thus meaning that DU has until 2012-13 to find itself a new conference to join.

Why would Denver be given a 5 year extension? I understand UNO, but Denver should have known they needed to catch-up in all sports.

IMHO...Wright Waters should have told DU to start looking elsewhere when Utah State, NMSU and Idaho left the Belt. Having them in hoops...creates an unweildy 13-team league. And because of unbalanced divisions (7 in one, 6 in the other)....we play one Eastern division team twice a year, while playing one Western division team only once.

Denver is a great member... the location just sucks. If they were in Tulsa or Memphis it wouldn't be an issue. The travel just doesn't work.

It would be nice if UNO works out their issues because they like UALR fit snugly within the footprint and help travel in basketball and non-revenue sports.

Truthfully, I was surprised when the presidents took the step of taking that vote knowing UNO was at risk.

Denver would probably be a better fit for the Big West or Big Sky conferences but there are problems for them with both of those leagues. The Big West does not play football but all their schools are in one state - California. They might not be interested in letting in a member from outside of California. The Big Sky has nine members. All of them play football. Adding Denver as a tenth school in all sports except football might not be a bad deal for them. I feel sorry for Denver because they are a very long way from most of the Sun Belt Conference members. Their travel budget must be huge. I wish them well in finding a new home - if that is what it comes to.

Here's another option for them...the Mid Continent Conference:
