Marion Barber and Terrance Newman were given big deals today.

Newman gets a six-year extension worth $50.2 million on Tuesday that includes $22.5 million guaranteed.

Barber gets a seven-year, $45 million deal, with $16 million guaranteed.

I think both are good signings. As for Barber, I love the guy and he is a stud of a runner but that much money to a guy that will share his carries and may not last that long in the NFL with the way he runs might not be the smartest thing.

Norm did a great piece on this on his show today....I wish I listened to it more carefully so I could post his numbers on here. He brought up the question you did, and then gave numbers to support it.

Your problem is with the MB signing? Newman is about to be 30. That's 65 in NFL corner years.

Well he is one of the highest paid backs in the NFL today and he will probabliy be sharing his carries and be a glorified part time back. Dont get me wrong...he is an absolute stud and he may be the guy that gives you 25-30 carries a game but then he has a lot of years in his contract and with the freak of nature he is on the field...I doubt he will be that effective for about 5 more seasons at most. Look at Shaun Alexander...the guy doesnt have much if anything in his legs. The RB position needs to be a rolling position and teams need to draft them every draft because their lifespan gets shorter and shorter in my opinion. Newman is 30 but I think the market value for CB's is really over paying. You are paying for a pretty primo CB and I dont have a problem with that. You dont know what you have in Pacman and rookie Mike Jenkins. Newman is a proven commodity and I think he does have about 5 decent seasons left in him. Though you make a good case that Newman was overpaid but I think good CB's today are pretty overpaid. Asante Samuel got a mega contract from the Eagles.

I have a problem with both signings. RB's wear out quickly, they are rarely worth long extended contracts. 30 year old cb's don't have much of a lifespan either.

It's just that they gave the CB 6 million dollars more that makes it a worse deal in my mind.

What are your thoughts on the new contract for Matt Ryan? I believe he is making more than Tom Brady.

I believe that is why the owners threw out the CBA, because it is insane to pay a rookie that much when he hasn't done anything. Of course, the players should demand better contract terms themselves, they have the worst CBA out of all the pro leagues. With the possible exception of the US Field Hockey League.
