North Texas Recruiting Class Named Best In The Sbc

As I have said, and will continue to say, the women's soccer team is a real bright spot for UNT athletics. Coach Hedlund has a very nice program, recruits great athletes (and students...check out the GPA of his teams and the graduation rates) and has developed a solid program that contends year in and year out. I am hopeful that UNT will begin to get the national recognition it deserves. Way to go Coach Hedlund and staff!

Green Mean...Aws most folks on this board know by now...I am 100% behind your comment and interest in re-starting a men's soccer program at UNT. It could very well happen, but a few "other" things need to be completed first...and funding needs to be there. AS RV once said...and I will paraphrase...I do not want to have money for one year for a men's soccer program and then have to shut it down again. If there were money to start and maintain a program on an on-going basis RV would put it together immediately. I really do believe that as RV has said that more than once. So, how do we go about raising $$$ for such? Ideas please...

Thats interesting because Texas and the DFW area has a lot of good soccer talent here and it gets overshadowed by the other sports. Maybe there can be alliances/partnerships with the various soccer organizations in the state as well as actively participating in the Dallas Cup for something. I think Soccer here is a really good market and wouldnt be shocked to see the UNT mens team as successful as the girls. As far as other forms of raising money, I am not sure what would be good as that issue is always the problem with UNT and UNT athletics.

Other issues too. Who to play, what conference to ask for OOC invite? Not enough men's teams in SBC.

I am guessing soccer of all sports shouldnt have that problem. I bet they can more easily schedule OOC opponents. Its not like football. I bet all the local teams and most of the in state teams would love to play NT if they had the chance too.

That was nortx9's point. I can't think of any major colleges in Texas that even field a men's team anymore. Because of this, travel would be tough.

I'm pretty sure that SMU does but they have to play in either the Gateway or Missouri Valley Conference because there are no other men's teams nearby.

Wow so mens soccer isnt in many of the big schools like UT, TT, A&M and Baylor? I thought all those schools had mens soccer programs. Wow that is news to me.

Here are teams that play in TX

SMU (they actually play in CUSA with FIU, Kentucky and South Carolina ;) )

Midwestern State

Southwestern University

UT-Dallas

UT-Tyler

Mary Hardin Baylor

East TX Baptist

Texas Lutheran

Hardin Simmons

Trinity

-The Big XII has no soccer but there are club teams at pretty much all of the schools...and apparently a movement to add the sport to the Big XII. Since soccer isn't widespread it is entirely possible that, should the Big XII add it as a sport, NT could play with them.

-In Oklahoma only Tulsa and Northeastern State play and I think they're both privates.

SMU still has men's soccer?! I could have sworn they cut that program in the late 90's.
