I'll back your proposed elimination of pit bulls once Guns, both hand guns and rifles, are eliminated. More people are killed by guns than are killed by Pit Bulls.

I need a post to celebrate the fact I agree with GreenBat on something.

ENOUGH ALREADY! Good thread, but looks to me like folks have their minds p[retty well made up on this subject. Let's talk football!

"Ex-LB Foley Charged After Dog Attack"

Gee, guess what kind of dog????? That ever so loveable PIT BULL strikes again! Seems Foley's pit bulls bit a woman and killed her puppy! Just another example of how just simply wonderful the pit bull is to have around! :angry:

Are really really judging an entire breed due to the headlines? Not like you will ever see the headlines John Doe's Pit saved the family from intruders, good thing almost never make the news. As a UPS driver most of our drivers that were bit, were bit by Chows, Rots, mutts, and the minor stuff was all little nipper breeds.

It just happens for some reason that having the meanest baddest dogs seem to be in lately with some inbred owner and there inbred dogs. These pits suck, true. But by far the vast majority of Pits, especially professionally bred pits are great dogs. It is the dumbass owners.

KingDL1 .. I agree that the "bumbass" owners are a BIG part of the problem...in fact, you would almost have to be a "Dumbass" to own one in the first place!

I do find it odd the trouble you mention with chows: I've lived in households with chow or chow mix dogs for at least 10 out of the last 15 years and never had any problems with any, which includes 2 purebred chows and 3 chow mix. At present I live in a duplex, and between us and our tenants, we have 2 chow mix and 1 purebred. I

ve never felt hesitant to let any kids who see them in the park and want to pet them, do so. I do think that chows guard territory jealously, and that care should be taken when bringing a stranger into a house or yard with a chow there. The owner should be with any guest long enough for both humans and dogs to feel comfortable.

I agree 100% about the dumbass owners; that's really where all responsibilities lie.

Another great opportunity to compare this to judging ANYTHING by headlines only. I mean, by headlines, guns are going to get us all killed. I mean, when I hear of a gun in the news, it's usually in a criminal act. Or cars, when I hear about cars in the news, it's probably a car accident. Alcohol, too...when it's in the news, it's a DUI/DWI accident. And video games, those tend to be in the news when some crackpot media "expert" calls them dangerous. And knives? When are they news? When someone is stabbed. By KRAM1's logic, we should outlaw the following:

knives guns cars gasoline tornados dogs trucks SUVs electricity AMTRAK alcohol cigarettes video games fists feet firecrackers bullets glass food cholesterol carbon monoxide metal bears poisonous snakes hiking areas campgrounds sharks jetskis motorcycles earthquakes

I mean, come on, they're all dangerous and only tend to be in the news when someone dies.

Or better yet, KRAM1 can realize that simply because something is in the news does not mean it's actually newsworthy, unbiased, well-researched, or even for actual informative purposes. I mean come on, anyone with a brain will tell you that news at this point in history is nothing more than a political platform, sensationalist haven, commercial outfit, and as such is really subject to greed and the fact that

SHOCK SELLS.

Why? Because the news outlets don't think we need to hear good news or anything that isn't full of blood, guts, sex and greed. Matter of fact, broadcast news isn't so much news as it is entertainment.

So, KRAM1, you still gonna grab all your info from the headline news outlets? Or are you going to put the fault where it belongs: in the hands of the owners?

Today from North Richland Hills, Teen accidentally shot while officers attempt to stop agreesive dog

The news cast at 10:00 p.m. stated it was a Pit Bull.

Dogs don't discern cops from robbers. They see a stranger approaching in a "threatening" manner and, if they are a good dog, they attempt to protect their master. Had this been a Lab people would be lamenting how tragic it was that such a good family dog was protecting it's owner when mistakingly shot by police.

I not trying to hammer Chows just that any breed that is big enough can be a problem if allowed to spiral out of control. Chows were running pretty wild over parts of Grand Prairie and Oak Cliff at the time I was a UPS driver. I was a driver for about 6 years and worked in both GP and Oak Cliff. Oak Cliff at the time was much worse with dogs in yards and wild roving strays. I drove from 94 to 2000.

And again, it's 2008. Rarely do we see Chows and Rotts anymore on the east side. It's Pits, Pits and more Pits, cheaply bred, cheaply acquired, further destroying their bloodlines. Anyone, especially those with children, who brings a Pit into their home is a fool.

Rick, how many calls do you get to see what good dogs Pits can be, or would it be fair to say you see the worst side of a dog breed, that has been in areas mis-bred the worst by Dumbass people, and now there seems to be an over abundance of them especially in the poorer areas of town?

There are still well bred Pits around, and if the popular dog in the hood was still the Chows odd are that we would be hearing about chows again.

That is why I like the controls San Francisco used, all pits must be nurtured unless you have a professional breeders license. Neutered and Spayed pits are much less likely to be aggressive.

I say eliminate the Dumbass people.

I am not trying to even get involved in this convo... but the teen that was shot story did run last night on the news @ 11... Witnesses are claiming that there was NO aggression from the dog but more of an overreaction by the officer. I don't like Pits, Chows, or Rots... I have been bitten and torn up by a Chow. Elimation is alittle extreme, legal action is not.

More than likely the Cop isn't as gullable as some here are and has seen first hand what a Pit does to people when it cannot be restrained by it's owner and, could have possibly over-reacted? We weren't there, we don't know for sure. But the situation fits perfectly with the norm for this breed, a bad situation turns worst.

If you let him live then next time you pick one up he might find you first. I once had to toss a gun to my father who had one about to strike him from about 9 inches away.. I could hear the snake but not see him from where I was. Fortunately he was able to shoot before taking a hit. We also have had raccoons tearing up feed sacks and making a mess and ruining a lot of cattle feed. I have known of them tearing up roofs (wood shingles) and making a large hole to get into attics... We have shot armadillos that were digging and tearing up flower beds and vegetable gardens. Guns do have a place in the world.... but some types should be regulated... no one needs a machine gun or bazooka.

---A couple of years ago, my son had a Emu rooster charge him with his feathers puffed up ready to fight (that bird was as tall if not taller than him) We were prepared this time , the day before he had found me and backed me about a hundred yards across a pasture to a pickup and I was staring at him the entire way expecting a fight at any minute. Granted I don't think people need these near machine guns with banana clips but guns have a place and we semi-rural people view them as tools... not toys. Most gun nuts I know don't own one acre of land or really need one for self defence.. These guys I wonder about.

---If you are concerned about Bambi... there are way too many of them now that screw-worms have been eliminated....(even with regular hunting) The highways are full of them and they eat up a lot of our food supply as well. Wait until we get a stretch of really dry years... because they are so overpopulated....many will just starve. If you care about them... remember hunting is quick and humane compared to starving. By the way I have never shot one... I am no gun nut or great white hunter.

---Pit Bulls should be banned from city residential areas.... they might be ok as "junk yard dogs" but where families live....no.... they can't be fully trusted... They sometimes go for years without a problem then one day decide to tear someone up ..sometimes the owner even. Read/listen to the news. The people I have known that owned one seemed to have a self image problem and wanted a tough dog to compensate. ..
