Sun Belt Football:

UNT loses 5 scholarships

FIU loses 3

FAU loses 3

Sun Belt Men's BB:

UNT loses 1

FIU loses 1

Ark St received a warning

LaLa was named as a chronic offender, along with Fresno State, East Carolina, New Mexico State, Hampton and Centenary. A chronic offender has a particularly low score and poor longer-term track records. Scholarship reduction for LaLa was non-available, but the Cajuns will be hit with a practice time reduction of up to one day a week. IMO that would be a very stiff penalty.

Women's BB:

None

Teams subject to penalty by institution

Teams subject to penalty by sport

APR data by school

wow we lost 5 football scholarships, that should be a wake-up call to the school.

Noticed Wash State lost 8, few other lost as many as 9.

Curious how OU and UT seem to survive with all their arrests and tranfers?

I guess they recruit crooks that can somehow pass classes...LOL

This is about staying in school and making progress and graduating...not court appearances.

Looking at the reports...

In Basketball:

Arkansas State has an APR of 893. That's 32 points below minimum. They're not suffering any contemporaneous penalty, they have a first-occasion Historical Penalty of "public notice". No listed scholarship penalty.

North Texas has an APR of 924. One point below minimum. Our contemporaneous penalty? Loss of a scholarship.

In Football:

Florida Atlantic has an APR of 915. Their penalty is 3 lost scholarships (82 max, not 85) and a maximum of 22 issued in one year.

Florida International has an APR of 887. They lose 3 scholarships (82 max, not 85) and they are also restricted to a maximum of 22 issued in a year.

North Texas has an APR of 917. Higher than either FIU or FAU. OUR penalty? We lose 5 scholarships. Our max is now 80.

What the hell??? How do these penalties work??

Basketball

AZ State APR 905 - No penalties???

Auburn APR 905 - No penalties based on demonstrated improvement and comparison to others schools? Can we compare ourselves to Auburn and get our scholarship back?

Clemson APR 920 - No penalties

Indiana APR 899 - No penalties for same reason as Auburn

It doesn't take long to see that this process is extremely arbitrary and that the Athletic Department should appeal the penalties (if that's possible).

Here is some NCAA material:

The APR is based on each student-athlete, having the opportunity to earn two points during each

regular academic term of full-time enrollment (e.g., fall semester). One point is awarded if the

student-athlete is academically eligible to compete the following regular academic term (or has

graduated). The other point is awarded if the student-athlete returns to the institution as a full-

time student the next regular academic term. The APR is calculated by adding all points earned

by student-athletes over the past three academic years and dividing that number by the total

possible points that could have been earned. That number is then multiplied by 1,000.

When a team’s academic performance, measured by that team’s APR, falls below 925, that team

becomes subject to penalties if any student-athlete on that team did not return to the institution as

a full-time student and was not academically eligible when the student-athlete left the institution.

This penalty is known as a contemporaneous penalty and potentially limits the amount of

athletics aid that the team may award.

A team becomes subject to incremental historical penalties each year the team’s APR is below

900. These penalties range from an Occasion-One Penalty of a public warning to an Occasion-

Four Penalty that could affect the institution’s Division I membership status. After receiving a

public warning, an institution’s team must have a multiyear APR of at least 900 for three

consecutive years or the team will be subject to the next level of penalties.

The second paragraph explains our situation. We were below 925 (we had 924) and we had a player leave the program while he was ineligible (Flemming). We are not allowed to replace that scholarship. No one has left yet this year so hopefully they will all make their grades and we will be above 925 and safe.
