or FAU.

Not likely. A bowl team that is pretty loaded again, and often predicted to repeat? No it is most likely Rice and then Temple (or the reverse).

You're right. I couldn't come up with another "Owl" school - is it just me, or is it easy to forget about Temple?

And it did say there would be two Owls in a row - so Rice-Temple or Temple-Rice.

I had to google Stringiforms :D:lol: Didn't know what the heck that was.

---GMG is now an educational site (on a football thread no less) .... I had no clue either.

Hey I had to look it up too, but I was just smart enough to pretend like I knew it already. ;)

#104 Rice

Game to watch: I’m excited for the Sept. 27 game against North Texas, which may feature 100 points, 1,000 yards of total offense and take two days to finish. This game has Versus written all over it.

Who is No. 103?: This university is located in the birthplace of the Soap Box Derby and Alcoholics Anonymous.

Looks like #103 will be Akron.

Read the full preview... GoMeanGreen.com is mentioned at the bottom.

Dream season: Despite a poor start, North Texas wins six of its final nine games to finish 6-6.

Whatever.

#102 North Texas

http://thequad.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/05/1...texas/#more-893

Who is No. 101?: This distinguished program had the worst season in team history in 2007. Maybe next time don’t fire a coach who leads you to seven bowl appearances in ten years?

The History is all wrong, and the only famous alums he could find was, Dr. Phil and Pat Boone, and Don Henley? Yea this guy did his research. Douche.

Why is this guy a douche...let me count the ways....

-He refers to everyone as "the sophomore" or "the senior" when every other writer in the world just says "sophomore" or "senior"

-He doesn't know that our defense now has a new co-ordinator (or any co-ordinator at all compared to what we had last season)

-He thinks "Mean Green" is an homage to Joe Greene when anyone who actually does their research knows it predates him

Plus, you know how I know he's gay?

He likes coldplay.

Some kudos to the board:

Where North Texas fans congregate: Go Mean Green earns bonus points for having a running thread discussing the Countdown since the Western Kentucky preview.

I would venture to say that most people outside of UNT believe the nick name came from Mean Joe Greene... so who is the real douche here, the general public- or the University that cant seem to get the correct story out there?

Most people outside of UNT have no idea who Joe Greene or the Mean Green are. However, most people do not get paid to write articles about the UNT team and fabricate part of the story because they are too lazy to do the research.

EVEN SO, we see this ALL THE TIME in various publications. I would wager most UNT students, if asked, would say we got our name from Mean Joe Greene as well.

At some point, it becomes the University's problem for not getting the correct story out there.

That or it's Tracy McGrady's fault.

I agree....most older people certainly know Joe Greene and even a lot of the younger folks atleast know him and know what he did. I never saw Joe Greene play or anything like that but since I was a little kid I always know Mean Joe Greene and always saw that famous commercial he did.

Sure billions of people in China are well aware of Joe. I would wager most students at NT do not know who Joe Greene is. I fail to see why the University would be overly concerned with getting the correct story out there. Mean green is the name of the athletic teams and it is obviously derived from the school colors. It was the nickname of the defense during the time Joe Greene played football. While Joe was the most well known and the best on the defense, there were also a number of other great players that also contributed to that defense inclusive of Chuck Beatty, Cedric Hardman, Chuck Mills, Johnny Mata, Fred Ende, etc. It was not used as a name of the football team until Fry overhauled the team image in the mid-70's. It is an easy assumption by those that know that Joe played at NT that "mean green" was derived from "Mean Joe Greene" which was a nickname that Greene picked up in the pros not at college.
