Uh, I've heard that NT has never gone through the proper legal channels to protect this name.

If that's the case, then ESPN has every right to label the Celtics the "Mean Green."

Yes they have. UNT pays CLC to police the use of all of the university branding, which of course "Mean Green" is included. There is always the discussion of what actually pertains to the university. There is a cleaner named Mean Green and a few other products that have nothing to do with the university. The name Mean Green is much harder to protect than "University of North Texas" because there is no question as to what that refers. CLC deals with selling products pertaining to the likeness of the university, as it is outlined here. "Mean Green" is really a trademark. It looks like Tyco Plastics LP currently owns the trademark, according to the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
