Women's Basketball Coach

I am I the only one who is amazed at how there has been no discussion recently about the new women's basketball coach either on this board or in the paper. It just shows you how low the interest in women's basketball has sunk at UNT. Usually there is speculation on names, etc., but not on this hire.

I think you are right about how Tina took the program to a unprecedented low. I do

feel that a new exciting woman's coach can bring to life a sleeping giant. That may

be a little strong, but a few years ago Baylor was close to being in the same position

we are in today.

I for one will buy Women's tickets for the first time in 45 years of following NT IF we

get a coach that excites the fan base like TD. That person must work in the community,

the school and be an outstanding recruiter. We don't need a whiner like Tina that can

only figure out how to be negative.

Go RV and make a great hire!

Ummm...Tina wasn't really ever negative? She just didn't win.

I wish I had an agenda behind every post I made.

A whiner like Tina? That was Slinker's biggest fault. She didn't raise a stink. She allowed her program to be under funded and treated like a bad foster child. She was a decent enought recruiter, with a the abilit to recruit the above average player every now and then. The reason she lasted 19 years is she was a good soldier during a time where the school was not doing the things it should have for women's athletics.

It was time for a change, but the new coach isn't going to have much better luck if the administration continues to do just enough to keep out of trouble. It is time for a leader, who will take the athletic program at NT to a new level.

I think part of people not caring is because most people dont know enough about womens college basketball as they do about the other sports. Other than a handful of people I cant recognize too many faces of womens basketall and I know I am in the majority with the same thought. If you start winning then people will start to care and take more notice. Thats my advice to all athletic programs.

I really don't think there is a sense of apathy, but until the job is officially posted and names start being linked, there is not much to discuss. I'm really interested in seeing who is on the short list of candidates. I've heard the same names as everyone else (in the DRC and FWST) but nothing to really confirm those names, therefore nothing to discuss.

Eh, I still think the answer is more posters.

I think we should live on the edge and hire the LSU women's coach who was fired

this year. She can really coach and really gets close to her players.

We would get great publicity for being a great liberal university. Who knows

we might be known as the Berkley of the south. Regardless she would get

total forgiveness if she started winning 20+ games a year and filling the

Super Pit.

Obviously, Wbb is the premier woman's sports and does well at many universities. At NT, not many have discovered men's bb much less the lady's. For those who never go to either of the bb teams games and may believe the highly inflated attendance numbers reported, basketball has a long way to go. By the way, I am definitely in favor of inflated attendance numbers, because it is the norm for all the less than powerhouse programs. The attendance for the men's team as definitely improved but still is an embarrassment for a very competitive team the last couple of years. The women's attendance average if you exclude the double header games, is probably less than three hundred.

I do hope that the Administration uses this chance to vastly upgrade the WBB program. I think RV has does well with his last couple of hires in Swimming and Tennis; and this is a much more important hire. The women do have a very good senior class next year with Jackson, Lee, Hull and Escalero. I believe with the right coach the team could fight for at least the Division championship next year. I hope the administration is not as lackadaisical with this hire as it appears from the few available reports.

Pokey Chatman has signed to coach in Russia with top club Spartak Moscow for the 2007-2008 season. Chatman will hopefully take her college experience to the professional level in Russia and Europe in general. Coach Pokey's experience spans from 2003-2007 where she coached at LSU and led her team to three straight Final Four appearances. Last year she resigned as coach of LSU and in August signed with Spartak Moscow . Last year the team captured the 2007 Euroleague's Final against the Ros Casares from Valencia (Spain).

The 1991 Kodak All-American point guard played for LSU from 1987 to 1991.

After completing her 13th season as a Lady Tiger coach Chatman took over the team in the middle of the 2003-2004 season and led LSU to a 15-5 record and the first Final Four in school history. Chatman led LSU to three consecutive NCAA Final Fours in 2004, 2005, and 2006

Chatman has won the Black Coaches Association’s Coach of the Year in 2004 and 2005; the 2005 USBWA National Coach of the Year, the 2005 Russell/WBCA National Coach of the Year; the 2005 Naismith National Coach of the Year and has been inducted into the LSU Hall of Fame in 1998.

Speculation on what happened at LSU

Name one fart joke.

Woman goes to a doctor and says, "Doctor I have horrible farts all the time but fortunately they don't smell and they are silent."

Doctor says take these pills and come back in a week.

Woman comes back and says "The gas is just as bad but the farts are still silent, but now they smell awful."

Doctor says OK we've fixed your sense of smell, now let's get you fitted for a hearing aid.

OK - Maybe I haven't paid enough attention, but:

1) Is there a selection committe in place? Or is RV just taking applications?

2) Have we not talked with any of the folks that were on that initial list of candidates?

3) What about the ex-UTA coach?

Maybe Spring Break got in the way of the selection process?

I do know there is a selection commitee in place. as for the uta coach i haven't heard if they have talked to her. I have heard there hasn't been much interest in the job. Don't really know for sure.

Nothing is more appropriate than using the old rural expression.....Pokey would be forgiven at lickety split speed.

I'm sorry but this is not true. I've been told there has been tremendous interest in the job. I was not given names but was told that voicemails in the athletic office are full. However, as to be expect with a committee in place there are certain procedures to go through in returning calls, evaluating resumes and narrowing the list. It's my guess we'll hear a lot more when the search is narrowed down to a "short list."

Well I certainly hope that's true.
